A question (or rather questions) about autogk...

I recently decided to make a backup of my LOTR dvds, so i want to convert them to Xvid using AutoGK, but since i'm pretty new to this , i have some questions...
My main aim is quality, size isn't really a problem since i'll burn them to DVD-Rs...
I see the predefined size max for DVDR is 2 GB. Is there some reason for that, or can i set it as high as i like, like 4 GB? Will it give me any better quality? Do i have to modify something else then? Or should i just set the target quality to 100? Will the avi be huge then? My computer is rather old but i don't mind if it takes long...
Also, should i tinker with resolution, aspect ratio and croping thingies or just let it do it's job (I guess, yes )? I just want the backup to be as close as possible to the original (i'm using my monitor for viewing if that is of any importance).

Asked before, i'm sure, but i would apreciate any help.

The DVD ISO file system has a 2 GB file size limit. Many Divx/DVD players have a 1 GB or 2GB limit. The UDF file system allows for any size, up to the size of the disc. But some Divx/DVD players don't read UDF.

Yeah, i suspected it was something like that (like the .vobs in a DVD are all 1 GB...).
But i plan on viewing it on a computer, so i guess it shouldn't be a problem.

i think xvid files with around 70% of compression are pretty good in quality

I usually use Xvid in Single Pass, Target Quantizer mode with a quantizer of 3. That's a good compromise between file size and video quality. Though I use VirtualDub and AviSynth, not AutoGK.

kevin182h's 70% quality in AutoGK will produce results similar in quality and size to your quant 3 in VDub, jagabo. If using AutoGK, I'd also recommend something similar. You don't need 100%, and you don't need to set it for the 2GB max. Also, because the credits are so long in the LOTR movies, I'd also recommend giving them lower quality, in order to free up bits for the main movie.

Yeah, I often do that too. Especially with TV series.
