i'd give imgburn a shot. if it can't get your old 8x burner to work it's probably dead.

Memorex are a very mixed bag. Personally I wouldn't touch them.

What errors does Imgburn produce ?

DVD Shrink doesn't burn. It uses Nero or DVD Decrypter. Which do you use ?

  5. didn't know that about dvd shrink, not paying attention.not sure of that error.I burned the iso in img burn now that I think about.I didn't save the failed log in img burn just nero.I think the memorex is not too good also.it will not burn most kinds of media these days, pretty much just the sony.also it will fail to burn at higher speeds I have to stay at 2x.If there was a fix I'd try it but my thinking is just break down and buy a new one
    thanks for the input

New burners are cheap. There is nothing you can do to fix a burner going bad other than rip it out and put in a new one.

    jfrenchu,

The atapi error code returned is vendor specific, so which part of the drive is-failing/did-fail is unknown, but it doesn't really matter which part it is. Some part of the burner is either going bad, or has gone bad.

My advice would be to follow guns1inger's advice...get a nice new shiny drive.

Drive appears to be Memorex, media in log is SONY.

Why are you burning at 2x? 16x media doesn't burn well at 2x in many drives.

  9. How old is your DVD burner? A lot of burners give out after a year or two. And like the other guy said, a new burner is cheap and relatively easy to install yourself or to have a friend put in.
