I am getting DVDs from people and they want me to make them a highlight film. I guess the best way would be to rip the content onto my pc rather then capture it using a dvd player, right? I was using Magic DVD Ripper but it doesn't support these home made DVDs I guess. I looked through the ones on this site but don't see where it gives me this option: I need one that allows you to preview and rip selected parts, not the whole thing, the same way you would capture something using a video editor. Any ideas? Also do any video editors ($100 range) include a ripping feature like this along with the normal capturing?

Yes, use your pc and a mpeg editor. Videoredo should be able to import dvds directly and you cut out what you want. You can also use free tools like dvd shrink in the reauthoring mode.

Smart Ripper lets you rip by chapter. Just throwing that out there.

Most of your higher quality VEs can do that. You've got to do a little comparison shopping to find the one you want.
