There are many posts in this forum alone that have settings and comparisons.

https://forum.videohelp.com/topic309181.html is a good starting point for Avisynth filters.

There's no way to "compare" because so many of them have a near-infinite number of settings or can be combined with other filters for various effects. There's quite a few in VirtualDub.

I tend to use Static NR plus Dynamic NR (MMX) in Vdub.
note -- NR = noise reduction

  4. In my opinion, NeatVideo is the ultimate tool for this and is extremely easy to use. One of it's nicest features is the preview option so you can see on screen before you render what it's going to clean-up and adjust realtime on screen. Price is very reasonable if you want to spend any money at all on cleanup.

Neat Video is the best filter, but it is a commercial one and also very - very slow

    Great freeware filters are:

    Video denoise: www.risingresearch.com/en/denoise
    Static Noise Reduction:www.shdon.com/vid/vid_snr
    MSU Denoising Filter: http://compression.ru/video/denoising/index_en.html
    Smart Smoother High Quality:http://neuron2.net/hiq/smoothhiq.html
    2D Cleaner: http://neuron2.net/2dcleaner.html
    Chroma Noise Reduction: http://freevcr.ifrance.com/virtualdub/cnr-en.html
    Dynamic Noise Reduction: www.shdon.com/view.php?cat=vid&doc=vid_dnr

Overall, you must realize that each video cases may need different filter setup, or a combination of them.

For example, there are filters like Temporal Smoother and Frame Merger that do miracles in some cases and harm the source on others.

Video Denoise/Static noise reductions/Dynamic Noise reduction, is a good combination IMO for most normal video cases.

  7. Hi,

    Thanks for these advices.

Here is a sample of the video (recorded with a standalone dvd recorder, from an analog source. When I recorded this video, I was using a very cheap and low end coaxial cable as well as low quality connectors).

    Mpeg-2 720*576 pal video.
    sample here: http://www2.partage-facile.com/1017470-sample.mpg.html

What filters is recommended for this type of noise ?

    Thanks.

It doesn't look too bad, just some grain and some blown highlights, but they may
be in the source. I like the NRS filter for Virtualdubmod I find the NR effective, the output maintains the
natural look, very low artifacts compared t some others.

I'm not an expert, but that's how it looks to me!

    Looks pretty good, Jagabo.

  11. I did it mostly as an example of what Neat Video can do. Since the source is MPEG I wouldn't bother filtering it myself. I don't mind a little noise and generally consider noise reduction as a reduction of quality rather than an improvement.

It was about a year ago, so don't know if it's changed. I had a terrible time with the
trial of Neat Video. Out of the handful of AVI files I tried at least 1/3 of them,
I was unable to find a frame that NV could grab a useful noise sample from.

If NV doesn't find a useful noise sample, does this program have anything
over say, Jim Casaburi's Temporal Cleaner ?

    Wow, great results.

What settings did you use in NeatVideo ?
How do you determine the values for ColorYUV ?

My source is Mpeg-2 not mpeg-1

  15. I determined the the ColorYUV() settings using The AviSynth filter called VideoScope(). It shows you an oscilliscope graph of the luma channel along with the video:

I marked IRE 0 (desired black level) and IRE 100 (desired white level) with green lines in the bottom graph. This sample is before fixing the levels.

From that I estimated the arguments for ColorYUV() then fine tuned (using VirtualDub to open the script and view the scope). Note that the very first frame is brighter than the rest so I ignored it. I just realized that I used the original frame with the black borders to adjust the levels -- you'll want to fine tune the black level without them.

Once I had the levels right I added the Neat Video filter to VirtualDub. I used Neat Video's automated tool for setting the filter parameters -- mark a flat area (I used part of the white wall in the background) then have it sample the noise in that area. Other than that I left everything at the default settings.

I cropped the frame (in the sample video I posted) because the demo version of Neat Video (the only one I have) has a 640x480 frame size limit.

Yep, i bought the NeatVideo filter about 6/8 months ago & it has done wonders with video worse than what you posted!!
Worth the money if you have the time to let it do it's process, which i have a machine dedicated to just running old video through that filter.
