I did extensive searches on this forum and found that SatStorm strongly advocates rmPAL filter for PAL VHS signal with color lines. I'm new to this video editing but every time I tried rmPAL it crashed VirtualDub 1.7.7: "An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'rmpal1'..."
I tried other filters (like MSU denoiser) and VirtualDub worked just fine.

BTW, these are my old wedding tapes in PAL. I use old multisystem VCR, WinXP on a P4 2.6 with 1024 MB RAM, VirtualDub with huffYUV211, 720x576 for capture on a BT card. I plan to use NeroVision for DVD authoring (in PAL, that my Phillips multiregion DVD handles just fine).

One more thing. I noticed that my VCR has a noise reduction setting (probably not TBC though, and makes picture very soft) and VirtualDub offers noise reduction during capture. I did't have time to experiment yet, but what is better, electronic noise filtering or digital (like the MSU denoiser, that is a 3D filter) or both?
Also, is it better to filter noise in VirtualDub on capture or afterwards?

Thanks, and I hope I'm not too obnoxious for a noob.

Thanks everyone for reading my post.
I spent another evening experimenting and found old version of virtualdub (1.5.10) that works well with rmPAL. Must be a bug in the new version.
However, no difference whatsoever. Can someone explain what rmPAL is supposed to do?

The VCR's NR circut is much stronger than the software filters that I tried (and smart smoother HQ is the best so far). There is a considerable loss of details though. This must be a frequency filter capping the analog bandwidth.

Anyone cares to comment on my configuration, plan of action, etc?
