I have an encoded video that`s been done in xvid. Unfortunately the aspect ratio has been encoded as 4:3, while the video itself is quite obviously from a 16:9 source.

I`ve been hunting around and most of the stuff I find pertains to changing aspect ratios for MPEG2, nothing that helps me much...

If there isn`t a simple flag that can be modified or the like, I would be willing to do a complete re-encode using virtualdub, but i can`t find a guide on how to make it output a 4:3 video as 16:9

Any help would be much appreciated.

For some video codecs there's a flag just like in mpg - I think mpeg4modifier (or something like that) can change the flag. Unfortunately, far from all players look at this flag, but always play AVI back at 1:1 PAR.
So, you might have to reencode. Just use the resize filter in VirtualDub and use any res with 16:9 AR (and where width & height is a multiple of 16 (or at least 8 )).
