I've been using vob2mpg v2.5 for a few weeks now without any issue. I've ripped 10+ DVDs with DVD Decrypter and converted them to mpg successfully with vob2mpg. I am running on XP Pro with SP2; dual core, lots of DDR and lots of HDD space.

Today vob2mpg won't even start; I get an XP error dialog with "vob2mpg has encountered a problem and needs to close". Looking at the logs tell me nothing because it doesn't even get far enough to write the log. The last entry is a successful conversion on 12/27. I can't tell you the exact vob2mpg version because now it won't start. It was downloaded from the official site at the beginning of December though...

I allowed Windows Update to install recently, incidentally also on the 27th??? Anyone know if the latest December updates somehow break compatibility for vob2mpeg?

Also, I've installed many 3rd party proggies such as codecs, encoders, etc, etc. Assuming vob2mpg is totally standalone and none of these corrupted the install?

i've re-installed and repaired and un-installed many times now and the result is the same. I've manually deleted all the registry entries and installed from scratch and nothing changes.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!!!

  2. Shouldn't be the codecs, but it might be the update. Have you tried a system restore?

Good tip regarding the restore. I will try that.

Hadn't thought about checking here earlier, but this makes me think it is related to the .NET framework. Here's the report from the Event Viewer -> Application log.

  4. I have no idea from that error what exactly is causing it. My suspicion is the same as yours - that it resulted from the update. If running the restore point from just prior to the update works, then we'll have to track down the cause from the update.

Restore isn't working at all; no matter how old or how recent a point I choose after it churns for a few minutes and reboots I get the message that the restore point cannot be used.

I manually uninstalled all 12 updates that were applied 12/27 but that isn't working either??? I'll post exactly which ones were added later
