Can someone tell me how to convert .srt to vobsub. I'm adding subtitles to avi for playing on a stand alone DVD player.

  2. Hi-

    One way is with SubtitleCreator.

Open the SRT file (File->Open text subtitles) followed by saving as IDX/SUB (File->Save VobSub).

If you're burning the subs into the AVI (as opposed to keeping them separate and selectable), then you don't have to convert them at all. One way to burn the subs into the AVI is by using AutoGK for the job:

Thank you for the answer, but autoGK is reconverting the avi file too? Right? I don't like to loose quality on the video. I will try with the Subtitle Creator.
    Thanks

Yes, if you want to "burn" or embed the subs into the video, then reencoding is necessary. As I didn't quite understand why you wanted to convert SRT to IDX/SUB since every standalone DVD/MPEG-4 player with which I'm familiar at least plays SRT subs, which are also considerably smaller in size than are the IDX/SUB files, I didn't know why you wanted to do the conversion. The thought occurred to me that maybe you wanted to burn the subs into the video, perhaps not knowing that SRTs could also be used. Anyway, I explained both ways.

Because, my DVD player can only read ANSI text, if I use subtitles in non-Latin languages, I’m getting unreadable characters on the screen. With Vobsubs – the player shows the exact “picture” of the characters.

I found another program that can do the job; it combines the .avi file and .srt subtitle into one file without recoding the .avi file again (No Quality loss) The new file is perfectly playable with subs on a DVD player. It works with non-Latin languages and also has a utility to fix incompatible .avi files
