What the heck is a "Firstplay Video"?
firstplay video...is this a (short) video that plays prior to the menus?

Well if anyone can answer your question, I would expect it to be someone in the VLC forum. Aside from that, it sounds like it is just the way VLC handles DVD playback. And knowing that it doesn't playback DVD the way you want, you now know not to use it to verify your projects. Knowing is half the battle.
