.TS Files Are A Pain

Hey,

I've found this site as a great place for info for years and i really need to ask the community on this one.

.TS files are a lovely new format that seems to be popping up all over the place for HD content. I have tried for the life of me to try and play these things and have had partial success. I managed to get The Matrix playing without a problem straight in PowerDVD (Blu-ray / HD-DVD edition), but cannot get T2 playing. The video plays fine but the audio won't, with both Zoom and Media Player Classic both play but the audio seems to stutter and go badly out of sync.

Now there doesn't seem to be any major difference in the actual files yet they won't play correctly. All i seem to get is that a .TS file is a container and from there the trail goes cold. I can see the sticky at the top of this thread but that seems to cover re-encoding the video.

Is the .TS format the most bastardly thing i've been able to come across or am i doing something incredibly stupid. I've heard VLC loves this format, but yet for both files it will display 0:00 out of 0:00 and the progress bar moves as if it were playing (but way too fast for it to be representative of what the file actually contains). Nothing is played via video or audio.

I don't want to be asking the same question as millions before me, but searching for a two letter file extension renders almost all internet searches pointless.

.ts is a transport stream and not really a container like an avi. you might try putting them into containers with HDTVtoMPEG2 which will convert them to mpeg2 - a more readily playable form.

.ts is not new it's an old format it's similar to the .mkv container it can contain teletext,video,audio and even more.
As far as i'm concerned like I got a new dvb-s card i'm looking for a way to convert .ts with virtualdubmod. or into xvid directly with another software if vdub isn't possible

I've tried to frameserve with avisynth as a test but this wasn't conclusive.

Any idea?

I have a movie in 4 .ts files and they won't play in any program and the same thing happens in vlc as with aslate, iv'e read everywhere that it shoulden't be any problem playing .ts files anybody knows what the problem could be?

I use a software which is very good to cut the ts files & make valid mpg files
it's called mpg video wizard (womble)
you should try it
It's frame accurate meaning it is able to cut at the exact frame you want unlike most of softwares that cut according to the gop.
The tip is once you have imported the .ts file within the software, in the export settings you must specify: mpg ps(program stream) instead of mpg ts and there you go, you export it and the file will be a valid mpg after that.
You can even import as many .ts files as you want, join them and get one mpg file after the operation.Not sure if the stream would be well synch'd , i haven't tried that but give it a try.

I got a lot of .ts files from my dreambox (not HD format) and I

Use ...

1 - projectx to demux and clean up the .ts stream

2 - cut, join and fix sync the demuxed files with mpeg2schnitt

3 - mux the final video with ImagoMPEG-Muxer (I think it cannot mux HD res.)

4 - autogk to encode it into an avi file (xvid/mp3)
autogk can handel .ts streams but the video is cleaner when you demux and cut it with the other programs.

VideoRedo can save to deferent formats with frame accurate cutting; Open a .TS and save as a .mpg, very very fast, about 8-15mins for a 60mins HD show when also cutting out ads and stuff. Even faster when you just open and save without cuts.

I also have just renamed the file before from movie.ts to movie.mpg and it played okay (as long as you have a good mpeg2 decoder and splitter).

I use ZoomPlayer with NVidia decoder.

I'm just getting started playing around with .ts files. Like aedipuss, I used HDTVtoMPEG to convert to an mpg2, and it worked quite well. It even has simple cutting capability, which worked OK for my purposes. I'm in the process of exploring some of the "better" MPG2 editors mentioned here - Mpg2cut2, VideoReDo and MPEG-VCR from Womble.

I was able to play the .ts file in MPC. I just had to go into Options and turn on the Internal Filter for "MPEG PS/TS/PVA".

First you should understand what a transport stream is for. Think of it as an armoured personnel carrier (packetized stream) for synchronized multiplexed media intended for launch into general telco networks, recording or wireless transmission. These aren't optimized for playback without demultiplex into separate streams and repackaged as a continous file in an appropriate container.
