Do you have a true 1080P TV? I'm partial to Oppo myself. They have excellent video quality ratings, then can upconvert, and a few are even Divx certified.

Many people say the Toshiba HD-DVD players have the best upconversion.

I don't know about the Samsung, but the Toshiba players can't be unlocked. HD-DVD's are region free, but not SD DVD.

You may also want to do a little research, your TV may already have good upconversion capabilities, in which case all you really need is a quality DVD player with whatever features you want.

Well, the thing is that I have a PS3, but I don't want to overuse it since I mostly use it for Blu-Rays. My current DVD player is pretty great (Lite-On), but it doesn't have HDMI capability.

Just copy your discs to DVD+R DL or DVD-R. Remove region protection at the ripping stage. Watch the copies.

Thanks for the suggestion but I have over 100 non region 1 DVDs so I rather not do that.

The Oppo units are great players, I have the older 971. All of them can be made region free (supported by Oppo). They also have great tech support and are very helpful resolving any issues you may have. There is great coverage on the Oppo units over at the AVS forums.

I own the Oppo DV-981HD hooked up to a Toshiba 47" 1080p LCD TV and would highly recommend it (see MOVIEGEEK's link).

I don't know if you have those in America, but latest Pioneers (and especially last years' 696 model) have pretty good upscalers (and many alternative firmwares to make them region free).

Samsung players are also good, but those that supports HDMI 1.3 may have surprises

You asked for the best. You didn't qualify it with "the best under $100" or anything else. The Oppo DV-981HD is clearly it. Read this review:

    http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-b...igitalDV-981HD

Now see how it rates against players costing many times its price:

Oh, I wasn't asking for anything lower in price or anything, just wanted to see what other options are good. Thanks for all your info, people
