Vegas Movie Studio 7/8 will not open the audio part of mp4/mp3 files. The trick is to feed it mp4/AAC, PCM, or some other audio format. Then do your edits and you CAN render out to Xvid/Lame. You just cannot bring it back in.

They don't want to block their buddies at Apple, hence the support for mp4/Mov/AAC.

Absolute crap. Yes, Vegas doesn't like VBR MP3. Many apps don't. It will load Xvid/Divx files if the FourCC is right. This has been documented many times around here. Searching will find you an answer. Vegas will happily read CBR MP3 audio, inside an avi container or as an MP3 audio file.

AVC/AAC is supported because they are a) industry standards, and b) used by Sony cameras and other Sony devices. Apple doesn't enter into it. MOV is supported again because it is a standard used for many years in video pipelines. Again, support is not to appease Apple, but to allow Vegas to work within pipelines that include other editing systems.

Goldwave does a very good job of extracting audio from video streams.
