I'm completely new to this and I'm really sorry if I didn't look hard enough in the search to find the answer...

If say I have a video that is hd which is on a higher resolution than standard definition, and I burned it on a normal dvd (ignore disk size issue) and try to play it on a regular dvd player hooked to a standard def TV (not a hi-def player/TV) ... will the video be displayed just fine but "downscaled" (if that's the right word?) to fit the TV screen? .. or will the dvd player simply refuse to play it because it is at a higher resolution?

I'm interested in buying the Philips DVP5982 dvd player (however I don't think my question has to do with this but thought I'd mention it anyway if it does depend on the dvd player). I know it has this 1080p upscaling feature but I'm talking about playing the video on a standard tv not an hd one.

    Thank you for your help

If you are thinking about Divx/Xvid then "the dvd player simply refuse to play it because it is at a higher resolution"

Standard DVD players must follow the DVD spec.
    See https://www.videohelp.com/dvd

Divx/Xvid playback is spec'd for each machine. Most won't play HD.

For Divx players that will play HD, see this list

thank you for the quick reply

the video (really is an episode of the office ) is like 624x352 ... even though it says it's supposed to be hd or something  ... does that mean it'd play fine seeing it's under the resolution for both ntsc/pal? or do I need to check something else in the video (like how its encoded and what not)? --sorry for the ignorance

thank you again for the reply

  6. You should get prepared with the tools needed to make such video playable, problems with QPEL and others, your player may quite likely find the video in-compatible. More reading and research might just prevent an unpleasant surprise.
