HDDVD/BluRay and x264+Matroska?

Alright, already kind of embarrassed for such a nub question, but I would like to know if any HDDVD / BluRay players support playing x264 encoded Matroska files? If so, which players, and if not, what would I convert the matroska files to, to play on a HDDVD/Bluray Player

Nope, they don't support mkv or mp4. You must reauthor to a hd-dvd or blu-ray, demux the audio and video tracks with mkvextractgui and then find a hd-dvd or blu-ray authoring tool with h264 support....if the h264 stream is hd-dvd/blu-ray compliant then.

I would get a media center with mkv,mp4 and h264 support instead.

They do NOT. To be blunt, if you have to ask how to get these files to work on an HD-DVD or BluRay player, you're probably not going to be successful at it. If you were experienced enough to do this, you would have found out the info on your own and not had to ask. Note that BluRay and HD-DVD authoring programs are not cheap, although the newest version of Nero is supposed to support both, I think, but Nero will probably support them in the half-assed way they do almost everything and what you burn may not necessarily work.

There are rumors of media streaming players that supposedly support X.264, but MKV support is hard to find and the reports I've read about such players to date didn't indicate that they played the files very well. Even today's fastest PCs can barely deal with 1080p X.264/H.264, so we're still years away from having settop players that can play these files correctly.

Nah just I'm not experienced with these 2 formats yet, I can encode DVD's fine because I understand the format, I never see anything about HD formats and I came here to ask because I figured I would find an answer faster than google, and I found half my answer here, so time for google I suppose..

EDIT: Also yes I made a mistake on the section :P I originally meant to put it there in general, but I guess since I was looking around the forum I forgot what section I was in :/

None of the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players support anything other than their native format. You won't find one that even plays RAW mpeg or Divx files. I doubt you even see any of those niche type players until one or both of these formats is highly adopted and supported.

If you need support for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and misc video files (Divx, x.264, mkv, etc), you will need to go the HTPC route.

I seem to recall reading in some thread here a bit back, about being able to record compliant HD Video on a DVD-/+R that would play back on either an HD-DVD or Blue Ray. I think it had something to do with a camcorder.

Anyone recall?

It should be possible, though you would have to use DL media and you still wouldn't get much playtime. I would also think it would only work on HD-DVD players, but I don't know either way.

As a side note, I seem to recall Sony has HD Blu-Ray based camcorders.

Forget the camcorder thing, but yes, it is possible with certain authoring tools to author HD-DVD compliant video and burn it to DVD+R DL and have it play back on HD-DVD players. The spec for HD-DVD explicitly supports DVD DL media. I have seen with my own eyes examples of HD captures from TV broadcasts that were successfully authored to DVD+R DL discs in HD-DVD format and could be played back on HD-DVD players.

It is also possible to do home authoring of BluRay as I've read about people who've done it, but I know almost nothing about the format or what it takes and I think that BluRay does not support BluRay content on DVD DL discs.
