    Hi,

I use CoreAVC with WMP11 on Vista Premium. I have a Panasonic HD-SD1 camcorder that produces AVCHD files with 1440x1080 resolution. When I use media player to play the files on my plasma screen the aspect ratio is not right and the picture looks streched horizontly with black lines on the top and bottom.
My plasma native resolution is 1024x768 but same files when played directly from camera cover the entire screen and look OK.

How can I fix the aspect ration issue?

Doesn't it record to 16:9 so it should be black border on a 4:3 monitor?

Or else try other players like PowerDVD, WInDVD, VLC, MPC, etc. In MPC can you manually adjust the ratio.

1440x1080 should be automatically adjusted to 1920x1080 by the player, and/or to the corresponding proper aspect ratio that fits inside your monitor.

Try FFPlayer. That's what I use (in combination with the K-Lite Mega Codec pack) to play back my AVCHD files on the PC.

Your computer or WMP thinks your 1024x768 plasma is a 4:3 monitor. So it's adding black and bars to letterbox the 16:9 video onto a 4:3 display. You need to let Windows or WMP know your display is 16:9 even though it's dimensions in pixels is 4:3.

I suppose the question is: does everything ELSE in Windows on this TV look oddly stretched?

If you are using an NVIDIA video card, the video card drivers usually have pretty decent handling for HDTV setups so you could effectively 'tell' your video card the aspect ratio of the TV, in addition to the maximum resolution. (ATI has something similar).

VLC has the parameter necessary for correcting for the monitor's pixel aspect ratio:

Try entering 1.333. I don't think VLC will play AVCHD with PAFF though.
