  1. @Drastic

for sure that project won't fit into a DVD-5 disc. A DVD-5 can contain maximum 4,700,372,992 bytes or 4,590,208 KB or 4,482 MB. AVStoDVD sets 4,450 MB for safety reasons. If you set 4,700 MB (custom) and you get an output of 4,544 MB, then the burning software will complain.

Reduce the manual bitrate setting (e.g. 3400 kbps) or, better, have AVStoDVD do the calculation for you by leaving the output DVD size to DVD-5 (not custom @4700).

If you have audio sync issues, don't touch the AviSynth script without knowledge (you have activated the conversion of framerate mode from VFR to CFR, but your clip is already CFR). Post the log file.

  2. Edit: Think I misunderstood what you meant by log. Where would I find the log you want to look at?

Like I said before, tried having it on automatic but it just didn't calculate it right and it said it wouldn't fit on the disk anyway, tried it on automatic twice with no luck.

As with the sync issue I just saw someone post that changing "false" to "true" would sort it and it did. At the start of the video, it had cut out about 3 seconds, there for the audio was behind and just couldn't find a fix. So I have been just doing that.

    Anyway, here is the log.

  3. The project log file can be located in the output DVD folder. It is a text file with .log extension.

Copy and paste the content here or just attach the .log file.

  4. The first one I think is with auto bit rate and the second is with title edit bit rate.

    CODECS REPORT

    H.264/AVC: Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder {212690FB-83E5-4526-8FD7-74478B7939CD}
I've seen this decoder create sync issues in the past. Might be worth a try at changing the preferred decoder to LavF.
Also, I've noticed it is persistent and stubborn. I had to use Win7DSFilterTweaker to make the change stick.

Don't know if this is the issue here but just trying to help.

  7. @Drastic

the culprit is within the 1st title ("Episode 3"): predicted output filesize is 1494.8 MB, actual output filesize is 2102.6 MB. The other 2 titles ("Episode 4" and "Episode 5") deliver consistent filesizes.

As gonca has suggested, you should avoid to have Microsoft DTV-DVD Video and Audio codecs doing the decoding stuff for your video and audio files. Use Win7DSFilterTweaker (or the tool inside AVStoDVD: 'Codecs'/'Preferred DirectShow Codecs Setup') to switch from MS codecs to LAV Filters. Then retry to encode just the 1st title ("Episode 3") to see if the output filesize becomes OK. Using LAV Filters instead of MS codecs could solve the sync issue too.

Another option, if the previous try fails, is to select 'HCenc VBR 2-pass' instead of 'HCenc VBR 1-pass' in 'Edit Title'/'Video' of 1st title. Encoding in 2 passes could give a better bitrate allocation.

    Bye

P.S. You can find many more info and details on how AVStoDVD works in the Help doc, mainly in the FAQ section. Just press F1 after opening AVStoDVD.

Ok, so just changed to LAV Filters and in the title preview the sync issue has gone, also, the video actually plays from the start. It would normally cut out about 3secs. So hopefully all will be fine after the encoding!

Will start the project and get back to you when I can.

Thanks for possibly sorting out my sync issue and gonca for also recommending it. Let's hope the rest goes well!

    @ trotskito,

Thanks for uploading the sample. Without your A2D log file I can mostly speculate, but I could reproduce your findings if MotionProtectedFPS is used.

Under "Preferences/AviSynth" you can change the method for hard fps conversion to "ChangeFPS", and this will most likely solve the issue.

    Technical:
Your source frame rate is 23.976, and it is progressive. A2D has to output a frame rate of 25 fps (PAL) or 29.97 (NTSC), and normally this would be done by soft pulldown or in case of PAL by speeding up audio and video. But in your case the source is VFR, and A2D uses hard fps conversion. This is technically not necessary because the source filter already converts VFR to CFR. The next version of A2D will have this issue fixed.

About the preferred fps conversion method:
MotionProtectedFPS gives you very smooth motion, but it can cause artifacts. In your sample the letters are static, but there is movement in the background, and MotionprotectedFPS tries to compensate the motion causing all kinds of warped edges around the characters.
ChangeFPS will not show these artifacts, but you will get motion judder because it inserts whole frames (not fields like pulldown). But as I said, the next version of A2D will not have these problems any more.

    Cheers
    manolito

  11. Ok so, done a couple of tests and the sync issue has gone. The only thing now is that the last episode on the disk will have problems near the end. Around 10-15mins to go. The other episodes are fine. The end of the last episode will freeze up. And sometimes skip a bit. Happened with just two episodes on disk aswell. Tried 2 pass, auto bit rate and manual. On dvd-5.

    Heres the log.

    Hi Drastics,

do you mean that it freezes up while playing the burned DVD? Because your log file does not show any errors.

To me it looks like a bad blank or a dirty lens on the burner (or a combination of both). I noticed that you adjusted your burning speed to 2.4 x. IMO this is not a good idea, any decent blanks can be burned at 8x these days (or at 4x for rewritables) - unless your burner has problems.

Posted the log just to make sure everything looks ok after the changes I made. It seems a few of my discs have scratches near the edge. Burnt another project so it doesn't go to the edge of the disc and it works fine.

It seems everything is working fine now. Thanks to the people that helped!

I've used AVStoDVD together with MakeMKV for some time to convert Blu-Ray movies into DVD format without any significant problems. The method that I generally use is to make an .mkv of the main movie, extract the sub-title .sup file and convert it to an .srt file, and then use AVStoDVD to convert and re-author the movie as a DVD using the .mkv and .srt files.

However, a problem has arisen since I upgraded AVStoDVD to version 2.8.2 in that on each occasion that I've re-authored a movie, when "fixing" the "errors" in the .srt file, the program has deleted the first sub-title of the .srt file. Whilst I can use the workaround of editing the temporary .srt file so as to re-insert the missing sub-title before running the conversion (which does work), having to do so is somewhat irritating and there does seem to be a bug of some kind in this latest version of one of my favourite programs.

  15. Hi philamber and welcome there.

If I have correctly understood, this issue was not present in A2D releases prior to 2.8.2, right?

Using my classic SRT samples I cannot reproduce the issue. Could you please attach here or send me by email (avstodvd@gmail.com) one of the SRT files you are having problems with?

Okay, I'm obviously never going to learn, so can I ask for a (hopefully easy) addition to your wonderful program?

When starting a DVD build without having enabled a menu, can a reminder pop up and offer to let us continue or cancel? I've lost years and created many menu-less DVDs in attempting to save my pride, but I'm officially giving up.

    Hopefully I'm not alone. Anyone?

Thanks for your prompt response. Your understanding is correct in that the issue was not present in releases prior to 2.8.2.

Attached is a sample which did not have issues previously but where the first sub-title was deleted by 2.8.2.

    thanks for the SRT file.

The cause why A2D deletes the 1st line is that the SRT is formatted using UTF-8 text code, instead of ANSI code. The workaround is easy: open the SRT file with Notepad and save it with ANSI coding. Then add the new SRT file to the A2D project.

Next A2D release will do that automatically.

Tested this over the weekend and the workaround was simple and effective. Thank you.

Also, I can save new srt files in ANSI just as easily as in UTF-8. I tested with a new srt saved in ANSI format and there were no errors. [I'll just have to manually edit any music symbols when saving in ANSI format.]

  21. @philamber

thanks for the feedback. And if you download the new Alpha release, it will take care to directly convert to ANSI.

^ Tested the alpha release with a UTF-8 coded .srt file and there were no problems with it.

    Wavi_Mod Plugin for AVStoDVD

Here's a new version of my Wavi_Mod plugin which offers alternative methods for audio normalizing. This is a major update with the following changes:

Replaced R128Gain with BS1770Gain. It supports normalizing according to the ReplayGain 2 (-18 LUFS), EBU R128 (-23 LUFS) and the ATSC (-24 LUFS) standards.

The Bit Depth for the intermediate PCM stream (or WAV file) can be specified. Either the resolution which AviSynth spits out can be used without change, or you can force 32bit float, 24bit int or 16bit int resolutions.

Several changes to make the plugin compatible with the latest A2D Alpha version.

    Download here:
    http://www4.zippyshare.com/v/GuYyZs9R/file.html

    //EDIT//
Uploaded a new version which includes "patchit" by McAfee for automatic patching of the A2D executable. Works for current and future versions of AVStoDVD. Removed the already patched executables from the distribution.

    Cheers

Trying to do a conversion today. Adding an SRT subtitle file I get "AVStoDVD (Function 'DeleteIfExi..." and the details say: "Error 55: File already open".

I've tried converting the encoding type, opening it subtitlecreator (where it works fine), opening in Subtitle Workshop and resaving it, but nothing stops that error.

It does allow me to continue and start the encoding job, which then fails when it gets: "<7/21/2015 3:26:38 PM>
WARNING! Process aborted during 'Title 2 SUBS encoding operations start' Section.
    <>"

    Any thoughts what this is?

Edit: Ugh. Updated to 2.8.2 to rule that out. Different video, dragged the video to AVStoDVD, fine, dragged an srt sub file to the window... and AVStoDVD locks up and stops responding.

    Getting frustrated.

  27. I'm having 2 subtitle issue with 2.82. Wondering if the Alpha will fix these?

    1. I just converted an MKV with Embedded subs to dvd. The film looks fine, but the subs are terribly over-saturated & almost unreadable.

If I play it on my pc as an mkv, the subs are fine.

    2. I've had a couple recent ones (.srt sub files) where I didn't select any color & the subs are pink (yuch!).

    See Help/FAQ/Subtitles/Q5.6

Q5.6 I am trying to process IDX/SUB subtitles and resulting colors are messed up. How can I do?
A: IDX/SUB subtitles are already in raster format and the colors palette map may differ from DVD to DVD.
After creating the DVD with the messed up colors, open it with PgcEdit, edit the main Title PGC, locate the wrong colors in the Color Lookup Table, usually foreground color and outline color, sometimes the background color too, and change them to the desired colors. Save DVD and check if the colors are now fixed.

  30. Just select the colours combination of your choice with PgcEdit
