About the mp4 sample on Youtube, I was able to encode it as well, both with ConvertFPS active (see log here) and removed from AviSynth script (see log here).

On the second attempt, DGPulldown was able to process the m2v file converted w/o ConvertFPS, meaning that the mp4 was actually CFR. I would suggest to inform Zenitram, the creator of MediaInfo, used by AVStoDVD to read files info, about that inaccuracy.
    MrC

Thanks for the link to the icon image. The Haali icon appears in the Task Bar before encoding starts.

I've run encodings with settings that seem to duplicate yours based on my logs matching yours (except for language).
    The encoding using ConvertFPS hangs.
The encoding without ConvertFPS aborts in HCenc with: "ERROR, invalid MPEG2 framerate".

Perhaps I could determine the difference from the HCenc.log files. Could you please post these so I can compare?

Is it possible that we're using different versions of some package? Mine are based on the standard install of the current version of AVStoDVD.

Anything else that I should look for as a possible source of the differences?

I'm using latest AVStoDVD release (2.5.1), as reported in the last line of the log files, with all and only the default included progs.

I fear that you have a codec issue. Have you installed only ffdshow as directshow filters suite, or do you have installed other codecs that can conflict with ffdshow? Does the filters graph (render the mp4 file with GraphEdit) reports only haali and ffdshow or other filters?

Here you are the HCenc.log file:

You're probably correct about the codecs. My initial attempt to encode these videos started with FreemakeVideoConverter, which I decided was a very bad approach. I'll work later on removing this. For now, I'd like to see what I have using GraphEdit.

I've never used GraphEdit and can't seem to figure out how to get the type of graph you show in your link. When I open an MPG file, I see a sequence of filters. When I open an MP4 file, I get a pop-up asking about installing necessary filters.

Could you please provide some brief guidance on how to get the the filter graph you show?

    This is how it should look, also, you can see it is using FFDShow for video;
you have to make sure it is set properly in the FFDShow decoder config.

  8. MrC, davexnet

Thanks so much for helping me resolve the problem encoding my MP4 file. It was not a codec issue. It was resolved by installing ffdshow. Once that was done:

GraphEdit showed the filter sequence for the MP4 file
the ffdshow and Haalie icons appear in the Task Bar for the entire encode
Ithe HCenc encode done in 11 minutes

Your suggestions regarding use of GraphEdit and the recurring references to ffdshow sent me back to the AVStoDVD docs to realize that ffdshow doesn't get installed as part of the AVStoDVD install. Obviously, this is something that you more experienced users probably always have installed. Any reason not to make it part of the AVStoDVD install?

I've got a question regarding appropriate encoding config.

I'm converting 5 videos totalling 3 hours to a single DVD (FWIW, a workout DVD for the SO). They're all fairly similar with very low quality:

    25-40 minutes each
    640x360
    300-600 kbps video average bitrate
    96 kbps audio

I've encoded all of them using:

    HCenc VBR 2-pass
    2000 kbps video average bitrate
    96 kbps audio

I figured that 2000 kbps was more than adequate for the low original bitrates and 50% increase in image size. The encoded videos total 2.6 GB. I'm only using 60% of the DVD, so I could increase the average bitrate and output file sizes and still fit all 5 videos on the DVD.

With such low input quality, would you expect any noticeable benefit by increasing the average bitrate?

Any preference for accomplishing this by directly setting the average bitrate vs. setting target file sizes proportional to video lengths?

Thanks again for all the great guidance.

Well, as a user like yourself and not as the author (MrC), I would say let the program pick the bitrate.
Leave each title set to auto bitrate and the program will pick the precise bitrate to maximize the disk usage .

The higher mpeg2 bitrate may still help, even if the source is poor quality. Best to use as high as possible -
it's not as if the space you saved is going to be used for anything else!

make sure you have installed Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow and, if you are a Windows7 user, select ffdshow as default decoding filter using Preferred Filter Tweaker.

    @jagreenfield

ffdshow is not part of AVStoDVD because there are users who want to choose their favorite directshow codecs, such as XviD, AVC Core, etc. I usually *suggest* to have only ffdshow installed, but I do not want to force anybody. What I can do is to add a warning message at the end of AVStoDVD installation, if ffdshow is not found in the current system.

About video bitrate, as rule of thumb, the higher, the better. BTW if the source is already compromised, such as Youtube low res clip, you can safely stay @2000 kbps.

  11. Mr C: I have installed MatroskaSplitter.exe from the AVStoDVD install. I have ffdshow [rev 3154][2009-12-09] installed since 2010; I can always upgrade to a newer version if that might help.

What does GraphEdit say if you render the source file?

  13. Sorry, I've not used GraphEdit before and don't see what that will tell me. GraphEdit is not intuitive to me.

    1. download GraphEdit
    2. open GraphEdit
    3. click on 'File'/'Render Media File'
    4. select the file you want to convert with AVStoDVD
    5. take a screenshot of the resulting graph
    6. post the screenshot here

I just got an error about "illegal characters" being in an .Srt subs file. Don't think I've seen that one before. I loaded the .Srt into a word processor, went through the file and found a number of pieces of dialogue that had "<i>" and "<i/>" in them. No idea what they were, since I think this was the first time I've seen those. After doing a Search / Replace to get rid of them, I think the job is going on to completion. They looked like some sort of coding, rather than the other odd junk -- like the remnants of some other language with non-Latinate characters -- that I've occasionally seen in a subs file.

Do any of the popular subtitle apps have a basic function that searches for the presence of "illegal" subtitle characters, with a convenient batch-fix for that ?

There's a non-standard version of the SRT subtitle format that uses HTML (?) codes to add things like styles. I'm not sure how well that format is supported, on average - or why you were seeing complaints about it; as far as I've seen here on VH, most programs just seem to parse the would-be tags as they would any other text, so, for example, you'd end up with those 'italics' tags actually printed in the subtitles you'd see on-screen (rather than any actual italicized text).

I think there are utilities and scripts that can strip HTML tags (or anything else in brackets like that) from a text file, so those might help. I don't know where to find them off the top of my head, though.

  19. There are some srt subs containing formatting tags. BTW SubtitlesCreator correctly handles them when converting to sup. Very probably the "illegal chars" are somewhere else.

Just be sure that the tags are <i> ... </i> and not <i> ... <i/>, as you reported.

If you still have doubts or problems, send me the srt file.

You know, I'm not sure at this point. Very possible that you're right. (The error came up just before the MuxMan phase, in AVStoDVD processing.) It's academic now: I removed all tags from that .SRT with the word-processor's Search & Replace function (probably no longer have the original file, but I'll look for it), then went on to complete that job satisfactorily.

If those tags are as uncommon as I suspect they are, this should be a very rare problem.

Here's another question, partially involving subtitles.

I have something that is already in a working DVD structure (VIDEO_TS with VOBs, etc.), but it has two language tracks, neither of which are of any use to me. (I'd like to toss the secondary one.)
And I also have a separate English .SRT file for this, picked up elsewhere. Can I marry these together with AVStoDVD ? (i.e., Can you feed an already existing DVD structure back into AVS, applying subtitles along the way ?) Or would I be better served with a different approach ?

thanks for the srt file (PM), I will try it ASAP and come back to you.

About the re-use of existing DVD structure, you can do the following:

    - Open the 'Parse DVD' section, under 'Tools'
    - Select the VIDEO_TS folder
    - Select only the video pgc, audio tracks, subs tracks you want to keep
    - Check the 3 'Demux ...' options
    - Process

Now you will have the elementary assets (m2v, ac3, sup) that can be added to AVStoDVD as titles. Then add the new SRT. Just make sure that the SRT timestamps are in synch with the original assets.

Thanks _MrC_, I will follow your instructions. As far as the SRT timestamps being in correct synch, isn't the only way to determine that to play the video or DVD ? Or did you add a Preview function at some point, and I just failed to notice it ?

For a long time now, I've occasionally run into situations where the subs appeared a couple seconds too early or too late, in the finished job. I probably have most of the frequently mentioned subtitle programs -- not just the one packaged with AVS -- most recently adding Aegisub. But whenever I looked at their respective tools or procedures for adjusting subtitle synch, they did not strike me as being readily accessible to the degree that I could use them without a good step-by-step guide. I think I even printed out one guide, from somewhere like Doom9, and it just seemed more complicated than I was prepared to deal with at the time.

hi MrC. thank you for a great program. i was wondering, is it possible to add other matrix to avstodvd for hcenc? i would like to use sharktooths EQM v3UHR. thank you.

    thanks for the kind words

About the EQM series matrices, I wonder if they can give good results on mpeg2 encoding, since they were originally developed for mpeg4. BTW, if you want to test you can add the *CUSTOMMATRIX command to HCenc ini file. Just toggle on the 'Edit command parameters at runtime' advanced option.

    Let me know

i cant vouch for the low bitrate eqm matrices, but the v3uhr i use all the time and it gives very good results. to me, it is noticably better than fox1. i can definitely see the extra detail that has been retained. i was using v3uhr matrix with hcgui most the time then inputting the resulting m2v file into avstodvd to be authored. just thought i would see if it was possible to add the matrix to avstodvd myself or if you could possibly add it in a future release. this would get rid of the extra step of me having to create the m2v file first before i could use avstodvd. thank you for taking the time to reply.

p.s. i've burn ALOT of movies using v3uhr matrix and have never had a playback problem on standalone dvd players that was caused by that matrix.

I burn a lot also, and am always interested in ways the results might be improved.

If you are suggesting optional "profiles" that could be applied to specific AVS jobs, I think that could be a good addition to the program development, if _MrC_ agrees. For (mostly) non-techies like myself, though, it would probably have to be implemented by something like checkboxes. And I'd like to see some guidance on when, where, & why they might be selected.

so i was able to encode a couple movies using the custommatrix option in hcenc ini file, but i keep gettin a TFF flag in the resulting dvd for the scan order. when i just use hcenc by itself to make the m2v file it sets the correct 2:3 pulldown flag and the resulting dvd is 2:3 pulldown. none of the sources are interlaced. is there a reason why avstodvd is doing this?

p.s. i think i figured out why. the source resolution is 1280x720 at 23.976fps. so when i just load the mkv file into avstodvd (keeps asking me for the fps. for some reason the version of mediainfo that avstodvd is using isnt recognizing alot of the mkv's fps so you have to set it manually. when i check the mkv with a newer version of mediainfo it shows the mkv's fps) it isnt adding borders so the 2:3 pulldown flag isnt being used. now when i make my own script (not using addborders but using directshow) avstodvd will then addborders in its own script but still doesnt add the pulldown option in hcenc. i wonder if this is a bug or something? also using a basic directshow script to open the video avstodvd doesnt ask me for the fps.

p.s.s. i decide to just delete avstodvd's self made script and put in my own script instead. that worked beautifully. it still didnt add the pulldown so i just added *PULLDOWN to hcenc ini file manually and that worked. it would be nice if the batchmux ini didnt pop up after hcenc encoding was done. if i start avstodvd's routine and i leave the pc, the batch ini pops up and it doesnt continue until you click the X on it meaning i would have to be at my pc to continue avstodvd. maybe a 15sec or 30sec countdown to automaticly continue would be a nice option.

Would it be the same procedure as outlined above, in a case where I wanted to add an unrelated short title to an existing DVD structure (NO new subs, or language tracks to delete, this time), in order to better fill out what would otherwise be unused, wasted space on the final DVD ? Or would this skip one or more of the steps above ?

about the SRT file, there is only one formatting error, bracket-slash-bracket, at subs #356:
    Code:
    356
    01:09:55,965 --> 01:10:02,320
</>Sterling Airways 427 to Las Palmas..
about adding another title to existing DVD assets, yes, you can use the same approach.

    @tebugg

about adding directly more matrices to AVStoDVD, unfortunately that's not possible, because HCenc has a limited number of built-in matrices (see HCenc026.pdf help file) to be called at runtime level. So far the only way is to use the *CUSTOMMATRIX command in the HCenc.ini file. Best option would be to ask Hank315 (HCenc author) to add the EQM series to the built-in matrices list.

About the interlaced/pulldown issue, do you still have the AVStoDVD log file of the first try? Could you please post it here?

About the countdown in the command input boxes, that's a good idea. I will put it in the ToDo list.
