Same thing over and over again:
You absolutely must avoid using the default Microsoft DirectShow source filters.

    @sepehr1360

In AVStoDVD you can either have multithreading enabled or disabled, there is no way to specify the number of cores you want to use.

Your i5 CPU has two physical cores and 2 additional virtual cores (Hyperthreading). If you have multithreading enabled in AVStoDVD all 4 cores will be used. If you only want to use the 2 physical cores the only way is to disable Hyperthreading in the BIOS setup.

  5. I updated to A2D Ver 2.8.4. I installed AviSynth 2.6.0 along with the installation. A2D reports I still don't have Avisynth 2.6.0. I went to the Avisynth site, downloaded and installed 2.6.0 Rev 2, but A2D still reports that I don't have the correct version.

    Any ideas?

I am not aware of a version 2.60 Rev 2, the official stable Avisynth version 2.60 is this one:
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/avisynth2/files/AviSynth%202.6/AviSynth%202.6.0/AviSy...0.exe/download

Uninstall your previous AviSynth version before you install the new version, also check your Registry and remove all references to older AviSynth versions.

  7. Is AVStoDVD capable of adding subtitles to existing DVD?

Every DVD I try to use with the Parse DVD feature gives me errors of type missmatch.

So I tried to load the IFO file of the main movie, adding the subtitles, but even if I have keep MPEG2 compilant stream checked and keep compilant audio stream checked it starts to encode my video.

I was hopping there might be some way to author those files and replace the originals with the newly created one which has the added subtitle.

I don't know if it is or not (although I expect it is) but here's Baldrick's guide to doing just that. Follow his Method 2:

Thanks Dave for pointing out that.

    Hi MrC,
you're welcome - always ready to find and point some of these obscure bugs. Seriously though, the product looks very good.
One thing noticed earlier in the thread the version of the FFmpegsource dll included (version 21) did not work properly.
Apparently, version 22 fixes the bugs, but this version has issues with Windows XP For my own XP system running A2D,
I dropped back to version 19 and found this to be OK.

    regards,
    Dave

    Hi Dave,

according to the ffms2 change log support for HEVC videostreams in an MKV container was only introduced with version 2.20. So if you need to decode such streams under WinXP you will be out of luck..

I use a much newer C-plugin version from Quot27 (ffms2 version 2.22_r1103). Getting the C-plugin to work transparently under AVStoDVD was a bit tricky, but it works flawlessly. Let me know if you are interested...

    Hi manolito -
yes, I'd like to see it. Please post a link if the instructions are already on here somewhere ...

To be honest, the dss2 mod you shared earlier has pretty much mitigated the reliance on FFmpegsource, I've been using it exclusively
and it's been working really well.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Get the plugin and instructions here:
    http://www25.zippyshare.com/v/nByFdbz1/file.html

And I agree, DSS2Mod in conjunction with LAV Filters has mostly replaced ffms2 for me, too.

  14. New 2.8.5 alpha release is out.

    Change log:

    - Some bugs fixed
    - Added 'IVTC' option (Inverse Video Telecine routine for hard-telecined NTSC source) to 'Edit Title'/'AviSynth' section
    - Added TIVTC plugins package to implement IVTC (TFM.TDecimate)
    - Added tooltips to 'Edit Title'/'AviSynth' options
    - Substituted FFmpeg with Mplex for MPEG2 muxing
    - Refactored wave PCM audio stream retaining
    - Forced selection of Full-D1 resolution when using FFmpeg and high bitrates (6500+) to avoid padding
    - FFMpegSource plugin updated to release 2.22 (r1103 C plugin)

Most of new features are inclusions of the several and valid mods by manolito. Unfortunately I have had very few time to carefully debug those new feats. I guess the bravest of you will help with the usual competency.

  16. @manolito

My Workflow has been going very very well so thanks again for all the help. I just came across a side project I wanted to ask about. My Brother has sent me various (roughly 5-8 min each on average) clips of an event he attended. They where all shot on his mobile phone using settings of 720p and as they are phone I think most are 25fps but they use variable framerate, and he wants me to put this into 1 movie with titles and then onto a dvd for him.

My question is should I convert all these first via AVSTODVD into the dvd format then use these in my editor or should I make the movie up first with the titles ect in the editor and output tp 720p mp4 then use this in AVSToDVD to get to the DVD?

I could do all in the editor but i'm not sure how it handles the frame rate being variable as Im used to just using contestant frame rate when Im editing video clips. I want to avoid a lot of encodes as you know they can degrade quality but im expexting to loose a little with the 720 to dvd side of it, its just makeing sure its a nice smoothing video framerate ways ect. I will have access to sony vegas 10 or 11 not sure which one for the editing and then AVSTODVD. I did a test run and converted the source clips first with AVSTODVD which came out very very well (as I expected with this great software) they all can be edited very well in the editor but I feel when I output from vegas its not as good as avstodvd but maybe im just not setting my output correctly????

I have attached some information from Media Info so you can see the type of files these are.
    Any advice or tips welcome.
    Thanks In advance

Sorry but I do not think that I can be of much help here...

I am not familiar with Sony Vegas at all, so I have no idea which settings you should use. All I can tell you that for DVD output the varible frame rate of your source files has to be converted to constant frame rate. AVStoDVD does this conversion through the source filter (DirectShowSource or FFmpegSource). Converting the source clips first using AVStoDVD sounds like a good idea, but the following processing with Vegas should avoid to reencode the clips a second time. Look for a feature called "Smart Rendering" which will reencode only the edited parts.

    Good luck

No worries my friend. I think I will use AVS2DVD to convert all these clips to dvd format (constant framerate ect). AVS2DVD seems to do a great job of make variable framerate clips into contant framerate. I then Plan to use vegas for another editor to make up the actual finished video and then try a smart render like you suggested or an option that only encodes where its needs (ie titles, effects cuts ect). I will have a little play around with it and see.

    Thanks

Just been looking at the free programme Handbrake and was wondering would it be any better or just the same as avs2dvd for converting variable frame rate clips to constant frame rate?

You cannot really compare Handbrake to AVStoDVD. Handbrake creates H.264 video, A2D creates DVD compliant MPEG2 video. If your final target format is DVD then it makes no sense to convert your source files to H.264 (with CFR) first, then edit them in Vegas and finally do another reencode to DVD.

I believe that you need to try out 2 different work flows:
    1. Convert to MPEG2 fiirst and then edit with Vegas
    2. Edit with Vegas in the native source format, export the result to the same format again using Smart Rendering, and finally encode to DVD

I remember reading a few times that video editing should always be done in the native source format, but I am totally ignorant when it comes to video editing...

  21. It has been awhile since I did any video conversions. Need to convert some BBC PAL DVD's to NTSC.

    Language: English (Dolby Digital 2.0)
    Subtitles: English
    Region: Region 2
    Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1

I assume DVDFab will change the regions code.

    Just installed AVStoDVD_285_Alpha161027_Install.exe
    Any recommended settings?

The source files I have are from a Smartphone camera. They are variable frame rate so I will have to convert them to Constant Frame Rate to make them easy to edit in Vegas. My final goal is to have them on DVD as one finished movie with titles and fades ect.

I have tried a few different workflows to try to keep the best quality and achieve the goal required.
I have tried to explain these below.

    Workflow 1
Source files (VFR) I converted directly with AVS2DVD which did a great job of fixing the frame rate from variable to constant and give me mpg files that I could edit with easily in Vegas. The problem came when I tried to get out of Vegas without losing quality and when I did, Vegas only seems to outputs the audio as mpeg and not AC3. To work around this I put my vegas output through DVD styler (to add a menu) but set it to not encode the video again but just the audio, This give me the final product with menu and ac3 audio which was all pretty decent but I wanted to try another workflow to compare quality against.

    Workflow 2
Source files (VFR) I converted directly with Handbrake to change the VFR to CFR. I also used RF0 Lossless setting and audio passthru to keep the quality loss at a minimum (as I read online in a few other tutorials but wasn’t sure as I never used handbrake before). This give me practically the same output mp4 files only with CFR instead of VFR so I could use these in vegas to edit and make my movie. Now once again I am stuck in vegas as to what format to go render out to without losing too much quality. Vegas has a plugin called Video4youtube which basically makes rending mp4 easier for newbie’s like myself at this video editing stuff.
Now I tried using this plugin at the 720p and the highest setting as according to its specs table it seems to match closely the specs of my source mp4 from handbrake only the bitrate is slightly less. I checked this using media info on both files. Now I plan to take this new mp4 from vegas and run it through AVS2DVD to get my final output for my DVD disc but I will also have a HD mp4 I can keep as a master copy for future ref.

I have to do a comparison between the 2 results to see what and if there is any quality difference that is major enough to make a fuss over but from this I guess workflow 2 seems to be the way to go as it keeps a quality master copy as well as giving me a quality dvd copy but as I said im new to all this so still learning. I have also tried to do the smart rending but from what I read vegas will not smart render mp4 and it gives audio sync and other issues ect with mpeg2 smart rendering so Im not sure that will work practically in this case.

    What do you think?
    Thanks

AVS2DVD is a great programme. I usually do the opposite of what you are looking to do I convert NTSC to Pal. If you are looking to Convert Pal to NTSC under options-preferences-avisynth you will find 2 tick boxed at the bottom. if you tick the bottom it should help with your conversion. I have attached a screen grab and hope it helps. Also i think DVDFAB will change the region code or even make it region free maybe depending on what settings are selected.
If you get stuck this forum has some great guys that have a very wide knowledge of video conversion stuff who are very helpful.

  24. Which encoder do you use? In the past, I used HCenc VBR 2-pass.
Do you recommend FFMpegSource rather than the default A2Dsource?

    Does this look right?

I use FFMPEG because for whatever reason on my system I was getting audio sync errors all the time on my conversions. I use AVS2DVD v 2.8.4 and I also have Manolito's FFMPEG plugin installed as this gives avs2dvd VBR when usinhg ffmpeg. Since you are using AVStoDVD_285_Alpha161027 version Im not sure if this has been included in the install or if you still have to manually install it but its very easy to do and Manolito has included a very well documented set of install instructions with it. If you wish to use this plugin let me know and I can give you the link to it.

First you could try A2DSOURCE to see how you get on as you may find it works 100% for you on your system. Just change the AVS Video and Audio source filters on the avisynth tab and check the NTSC slowdown for pal Box. Then in the video TAB instead of smart selection for the video encoder you could use HCenc 1 or 2 pass whichever you think gives you the best outcome.

As I said I was having issues with any other settings other than ffmpeg and now I use avs2dvd with ffmpeg all the time and especially with manolito's vbr plugin it gives me very good results that I'm happy with. You could try a few tests on a small clip from your source footage and see what works best for you before you do the full source conversion.

    Hope this helps

sure no problem. Try the link below

    http://www31.zippyshare.com/v/3F9AcVNv/file.html

This has all of Manolitos plugins in the one zip file but you will just need the FFMPEG.zip one so unzip that one and follow the ff_vbr.pdf in that folder to install. Its very simple and very well documented and when used provides great results.

The default threshold values are all very well set thanks to Manolito so I just stay with them as they give the best overall balance. To turn on the vbr modes just right click and edit on the ff_vbr.bat file and in the two lines select one buy setting the 0 to 1 this is also explained in the file at the top. My look like this:

    SET Force 1-pass VBR=1
    SET Force 2-pass VBR=0

The only other thing I changed was to use mplex for muxing as this seems to give better results also. To change this just scroll down and change the 0 to 1 in the following line:

    SET UseMplex=1

Then save and in the avs2dvd settings enable ffmpeg source filters and choose ffmpeg CBR 1pass for the video encoder.
I think thats is it but if I think of anything else I will let you know.

    Thanks

    Hi nicksteel,

get the latest ff_vbr plugin for AVStoDVD here:
    http://www103.zippyshare.com/v/2AsOVIX8/file.html
This version is already optimized for the latest AVStoDVD Alpha version - do not use it with the stable version 2.8.4 and below.

Please keep in mind that you usually will get excellent results using HCenc. The FFmpeg VBR plugin is for folks who cannot get HCenc to work correctly under AVStoDVD.

For your task to convert some BBC PAL clips to NTSC it would be helpful if you posted the MediaInfo results for one of your source files here. Maybe even a link to one of the original source files...

    Cheers

just an update on my other questions, it seems you are correct if I do my workflow 2 option which means editing in the native format and then use avs2dvd for the final dvd production it gives me very good quality compared to the work flow one where I convert to mpeg first then re encode to mpeg. so i guess I will stay with workflow 2 for any smartphone clips in the future.

Just one question if I want to output to dvd as my final coal and a smartphone is recording at 720p instead of 1080p as its closer to the dvd standard than 1080p then what bit rate should it be set to, The clips I was working on was set to 20mb apx but if we choose 12mbps the quality seems to be pretty much the same but with smaller file size so would it be best to use something like 12mbps to record in of we want the final videos edited out to a dvd?

    thanks

    NO !
the quality of the cellphone source at 720p will be reduced if he uses a lower bitrate for the 720p resolution

    keep recording at the 20mb
reduce the bitrate during the conversion ,because the resolution is smaller
you want to try and maintain the bits per pixel ratio, to maintain quality, which is what you are doing now 20mb 720 to 12mb 480
