Trying to save some videos using VLC.

I have a video monitor that will only play the following video formats:

    mpeg4 (divx), mpeg2 (dvd), mpeg1 (svcd), mpeg1 (vcd)

Can someone help with what setting I should be using when I save my files?

    Thanks.

What do you mean by "video monitor"? Do you mean a standalone dvd disc player that you connect to a tv? If so you need to get something like WinFF to author a disc for you. WinFF can handle any of those formats as an ouptput.

The external player needs a menu in addition to the movie files themselves. That's the "authoring" part.

Do you mean your computer will only play those format's...???
You have a very confusing post...
What format do you want to save to???
    What are you recording??
    What program(NLE).?
Or are you talking about you-tube??? Or something else on the internet??
Your monitor will show you whatever your computer sends to it...

This is a stand alone video monitor that does not connect to anything.
It has only one cord and that is the power cord.

It is a 15" TFT-LCD AD Display monitor.

I load my files onto a USB stick which connects to the monitor.
Files can pictures, songs, or videos.

Using VLC for the videos, I enter the MMS for the video I want.
But I'm lost at what settings I need check when I go to save the video.

As I said in my first post, this monitor will only play certain types of files:
    mpeg4 (divx), mpeg2 (dvd), mpeg1 (svcd), mpeg1 (vcd)

Can anyone help and tell me what I need to check so that my files are formatted correctly
    to play on this monitor?

  5. Try MPEG-2 video, MPEG audio, save as MPEG PS (program stream -- .MPG).

That didn't do it. The monitor freezes up as it is trying to figure out the file format.

    So it's a standalone media player ?

Can you give any details on the make or model ? There is a lot of possible variation amongst the file formats you have specified that could make them unplayable in your player. You need to narrow down the problem somewhat.

Did the player come with any software ? Many come with a program for converting video to a specific, playable format. Yes, it is usually crap, but it is a start.

Yep, this is a stand alone player. I got this monitor from Budwieser. It is a no name generic stand alone player that came with no software.

In the box were a remote control, monitor, user manual, and power cord.

  9. As guns1inger pointed out, the specs you gave are quite broad and any particular player may only be able to handle a subset. For example, it may require MPEG2 files that are within DVD spec. Unusual frame sizes orframe rates may not play.

What are the properties of the file(s) you've tried to convert? VLC, as far as I know, doesn't allow you to change the frame size and frame rate. You may have to use something else. Do the players specs mention Divx anywhere?

The specs I gave are per the manual. I just copied what the manual is saying.

Not sure If i understand your question. I haven't tried to convert any files yet using VLC. I'm trying to download the files and save them as mpegs that will play on this monitor.

  11. SO what are the specs of the files you've tried so far? Try using GSpot to get the details if you don't know how to get them.

D'oh! I knew I was going to get asked that question.
It seems like I've tried quite a few different combinations I just don't recall which ones I tried.

The last one I tried was:

    video.mpg
    mpeg.ts
    mp2v
    mp3

Have you been able to play anything on it? Any pictures or mp3s?

Yeah, I've loaded pics and mp3s no problem.

It's videos I'm having problems with.
I dont' have the right settings on VLC.

  15. VCD, SVCD, and DVD are very specific about MPG properties. Start by seeing the VCD and DVD sections on the "What Is" menu at the top left of every page here. Make your files match that. VLC won't work unless the frame size and frame rate already matches the required specs.

Try using SUPER instead. You can feed it a stream address, and have it convert the file as well. VLC's transcoding, as has been pointed, is limited in many respects. However, aside from VCD/SVCD/DVD which all work within pretty well defined specifications, without more detail about the player's capabilities you will be just guessing.

Is it like one of these?
    http://www.shoptronics.com/aupvpopemepl.html

Kingston used to make a portable media player, but it didn't go over well because you had to convert your movie files into a proprietary format (free Windows software to do it). It was very inexpensive, less than $35 recondotioned on sale w/ 2GB internal flash memory.

No. The monitor is more along the lines of something like this.

    Gunslinger, what other
details of the player do you need?

I haven't had a chance to try Supra yet.
When i do, I'll let everyone know what I get.

So it is a monitor with built-in media player ?

Do you have a digital camera or camera on your cell phone ?

A picture of the front, and if possible, a readable picture of the serial tag on the back would help a lot.

  20. You could start with the name of the manufacturer and the model number.

What media does it play from? USB thumb drive? Flash memory card? DVD? CD?

Divx compatability presumably means Divx AVI. Try converting one of your files with Divx converter.

Many players have limitations on file sizes -- they won't play files over 1GB or 2GB, for example.

I drop the MMS link in the box at the bottom and then what do I do?

If the specs on the device are correct, you only have very limited resolutions:

    VCD = 352x388
    svcd = 480x480
    dvd = 720x576
    divx5 = 640x480

If you encode only use those settings. WinFF will convert files to those specs, too. It's free.

  24. There are some typos in that list.

NTSC VCD is 352x240, 29.97 fps
PAL VCD is 352x288, 25 fps

NTSC SVCD is 480x480, 29.97 fps
PAL SVCD is 480x576, 25 fps

NTSC DVD is 720x480, 23.976 fps plus pulldown flags, or 29.97 fps
PAL DVD is 720x576, 25 fps

OK then... can someone please dumb down a step by step of what I have to do to get videos to play on this monitor?

I am using VLC but I haven't figured out what settings I should be using.
I download Super as suggested... I couldn't figure it out.

    Any suggestions?

What videos are you trying to convert ?

VLC is really the wrong tool for this except in very specific situations.

So lets start with one simple video to see if you can get it to play.

    Just music videos from Yahoo.

It was suggested I use either SDP or VLC to download the videos using MMS. SDP was working at first but then I was having problems. I switched over to VLC and was having zero problems. I was going to burn the videos onto a DVD. I believe they were in WMV format.

I than came across the stand alone monitor. Well, the monitor doesn't play WMV format, only in MPG.

What other program will help me download videos when I enter MMS and convert it so MPG that will play on this monitor?

Down load as WMV with VLC, if that is working for you, then encode to MPG or Divx afterwards. There is no need to do it all in one step.

Yeah, VLC is working fine in WMV.

What should I use to encode and how?
I've got Super downloaded if I can use that.
If so, what settings will I be checking off?

Have you ever had any vid play on the rig?

Here's one you can try (only fair quality due to trying to keep the size down), but it seems to meet the requirements.

    Video: MPEG2 Video 720x576 (16:9) 25.00fps 4400Kbps [Video]
Audio: MPEG Audio 48000Hz stereo 192Kbps [Audio]
