need a basic video editing software to import youtube vids. (not wmm)

can anyone help me by suggesting an easy video editing tool. all i want to do is import vids from youtube
then playback in slow motion.
i have had some headaches using win movie maker, i think i did everything correctly even downloading the codecs
that i needed and still did not work.
this should be a relatively easy task, but i have spent a fair bit of time on this without success.
any suggestions?
