Getting a DVD into DV...

I've done some research but still I'm looking for the simple answer or solution on how to take a DVD (uncopyrighted of course) and ripping it down to a DV format that I can then use in Premiere. Most of the software that I come across will let you rip it down to an avi file (XVid or DivX format) which doesn't help me. I need DV so my Matrox Card will see it and allow me to work real time. I have used Virtual Dub and ripped the DVD down to a DV format but the audio is never sync'd. Any suggestions?

I haven't either find any easy solution for that like a very simple dvd2dv tool.

You can try vob2mpg and then open the mpg in virtualdubmpeg2. If it's ac3 audio install AC3 ACM Decompressor.

You can also try Mpeg Streamclip, select the main vobs and convert to avi dv.

But some dvds has an ac3 delay(I don't know if vob2mpg, mpeg streamclip fixes it...), I'm not sure what's the easiest way to fix it, maybe to demux with rejig in ifo mode and use the Correct ac3 delay, select the audio stream and then convert the ac3 to wav with daudiok and use the wav audio as audio source in virtualdubmpeg2 when converting to dv avi.

DVD --> rip w/ DVDdecrypter (etc) in IFO mode w/Stream Processing-Demuxing --> M2V+AC3 --> Open in VirtualdubMPEG2 (w/AC3filter decoding) --> Save as lossless Vid+PCM Aud AVI --> Open in Premiere (with DV preset) --> Load into timeline, render --> PlayOut/Export to Tape.

Once verified that tape is OK, you can delete intermediate files. You probably could also frameserve some of this.

I'd test out Mpegstreamclip . Download the latest beta from their website. Export your Vobs to DV. Try it and see if it works. Haven't tested it, though.

I use VirtualDub Mod for that. You could extract the DVD to MPEG with VOB2MPG, then open it in VDM and re-encode to DV. I'm not sure why the audio wouldn't be in sync. Conversion to DV shouldn't effect that.

Wont you get any ac3 delay problem using vob2mpg and vdm?

Just finished the rough of a project that required DVD clips to be intercut with DV footage.

I used VirtualDub-MPEG2 to convert the DVD material to DV. All of the converted clips have audio sync issues (audio behind the video).

Using Vegas 6, I copied the audio portion of the converted clips to a new audio track, muted the original and moved them forward (slightly) on the timeline. Result = liplock!

There were also quality issues with some of the converted video which I guess are the result of multiple de/recompressions. Nothing too bad, though. No time to chase this down - yet.

If the project gets the go ahead for more work, I'll try recording the output of my DVD player with my DV camcorder and see how that works.

You could skip the conversion step by editing in the ripped DVD material with MPEG VideoWizard ot VideoReDo after encoding the DV material to MPEG2. I didn't use this method because whenever I released a new version of the DV material, I would have to cut in the DVD clips again. I'd rather render the entire project at once.
