encode avi files

Could somebody give me an idiots guide on how to encode avi files separately. I would like each file to have a beginning and an end so when i copy to dvd its not just the one continious film.

I guess you want a DVD?

Add all avis in latest tmpgenc dvd author, add each clip as a separate title, make menus and burn.

Or are you looking for free tools? Then you can convert each avi with for example quenc and then add each clip in a dvd authoring tool like guifordvdauthor, dvdstyler.
