I want to add subtitles to video I've converted from a DVD to H.264. I've tried to use VirtualDub with the subtitler filter to do this, but it doesn't understand the video codec so I can't, I've also got the vobsubs converted to SRT with subrip. Also, if it's possible, I'd like to do this without having to re-encode this video, just put the subtitles over the video, I'm a but of a videophile so I can easily notice minor mistakes in the result of an encoding process.

You must reconvert if you want hard-code subtitles.

What container are you using? mp4? mkv? avi?

And if the subs are from the same dvd you can use fairuse wizard to convert directly to h264 and hardcode subtitles.

Thanks so much for the help. I've been looking for a good solution for this. I watch a lot of anime, mostly subbed, and converting it to H.264 from a dvd with the subtitles has been a major pain and now I finally have what I need. Thank you so much.
