The only things I've changed today are installing Itunes (to setup my iphone), updating my video card driver, and that's about it.

For some reason, Media Player Classic won't play my wmv files anymore. I get the failed to render popup.

Gspot says "codec status undetermined" which is for wmv 1, 2, 3..etc...

    Does anyone have any idea?

    My OS is Windows XP.
VLC will play it but I find this strange.

    I googled
    MPC WMV
and it came up with this list:

    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2005-12,GGLD:en&q=mpc+wmv

The first one in the list looks promising. It says you need wmp 6.4 installed first. They provide a direct link to wmp 6.4 in case yours is damaged or deleted. There is also a link to a codec pack which will only install if you have wmp 6.4 installed. MPC must need DLL's of the older wmp to work.

    http://www.msfn.org/board/Media_Player_Classic_MPC_show_WMV_t37370.html

MPC plays wmv ok on my system but I prefer KMPlayer and don't use it much myself. Don't know if the instructions on that site work but they sound reasonable.

Thanks everyone for their help so far.

I did make sure everything is set correctly on MPC.

Here is a screensot of the screen that appears when I try to play a wmv file.
Downloading the codecs pack that was linked did improve the situation. When I close the error screen, I can view the wmv now so I'm partly there. I downloaded the runtime 9 for wmp and that didn't help.

The screenshot is not showing. If it's a jpg or GIF under 2 mb you can post it directly here
