Panasonic DVD Recorder, no multi region, what to do?

Hi,

Have googled, and searched the forums prior to posting here, but can't find an answer. We just purchased a Panasonic DVD recorder, model DMR-EX87. It is the Australian version, region 4. Is not multi region.

Is there a hack for this? Some code I can put in to overide it so that all regions will work? My old DVD player was that simple.

If not, do people do this as a service? Can I find someone local and pay them??

Please ignore this question. Despite what the box would have me believe, I just tried a few region 1's and they seem to work OK. Weird.
