open .avi file and get unrecognized in from box on left. i am trying to make dvd. if i encode i get a video_ts folder with .vob files but the player is black when played.

If the left says unrecognized try if it will work with a mencoder target format. Sometimes ffmpeg doesn't recognize files, but they convert if you choose mencoder.

For DVD as target format you could then choose the mpeg2enc target format and select "decode with mplayer" in the options tab.
