The source is H.264 .mp4 (avc1, 852x480 not sure if that is 720p or 480p) in which I encoded myself of a home made video but I lost it so I"m stuck with the .mp4. and i want to convert to be playable on my divx dvd player. i already have k-lite codec's h.264 codec to play back h.264s @ 720p & hopefully to encode. I want to "simply convert" from .mp4 format to .avi format without any additional or unnecessary changes like resolution. I'm thinking of tmpg Xpress 3.0, ateme, nero digital, or mainconcept but is there a better program out there for mpeg-avc H.264 video quality conversion wise?

You wish to convert from h264 MP4 to DivX w/ Mp3 audio AVI, compatible with a DivX DVD player. Lots of programs can do that, including AviDemux , which is free and has many good quality video enhancement filters. Resize your video to 720x400 max to be compatible with DivX DVD players - 640x352 works nicely as well.

If you want to end up with a Divx compatible file, then you could try AutoGK. Or maybe SUPER. It depends if either of them can read the H264 file to be able to convert it. The program you use doesn't mean much. They will all use the same Divx or Xvid codecs to do the conversion. Quality is determined by the source quality and the codec settings.

K-Lite is more likely to cause problems than be any help.

even if my DivX DVD player is 720p? I mean will the 852x480 be compatible with the 720p DivX DVD player?

  5. Your divx player will refuse to play ANY file with resolutions greater than a DVD eg 720x576 ergo even if you could do an absolute straight conversion from mp4 to avi you would still have to downscale it. Even if your divx player is an upscaling player ALso your avi must be dixv or xvid (or possibly 3ivx)

There are a few Divx/DVD players that will play up to 1280x720 Divx files.

Yes, of course, if your DivX DVD player can play higher resolutions, then the dimensions don't apply.
