bought a High Definition Canon HV10 camcorder recently, however for some stupid reason they do not include HD software so cant capture to computer.
I knew HD is still fairly new so might have software problems. But got it so I can have top quality archive matreial which can be used later, when HD is more widespread. In the meantine wanted to use the HD material and convert to normal files like DivX, wmv, etc. But not sure if this is possible as I have no software for HD?
Is it possible to convert HD material down to DV or DivX, wmv,etc -and how what software, etc??

Are you looking for free software? Try HDVSplit and see http://forum.videohelp.com/topic303573.html how to convert.
Or else should most new advanced editors be able to capture from the hdv like ulead videostudio, adobe premiere, etc. And yes you can convert down to dv,divx, wmv usings those.
What about capturing and field order on the HV10 i still have not found a good explanation of what field order to use with the HV10. Any help would seriously be appreciated alot !!! :]
Hard to believe Canon didn't supply some sort of cap software. Maybe it's mistakenly missing. You can always ask them.
Anyway, you'll need a pretty fast box to cap HD. 3gHz I believe is the minimum recommended CPU speed, possibly more, with lots of ram.
Mine's only 2.2gHz so I'm downconverting the HD in the cam and outputting DV in the meantime 'till I build another box this Winter. Your cam will do the same but it's just DV.
I received a free copy of VS9 but haven't looked to see if this version will cap HD. Right now, I think Baldrick is right as HDVSplit is the only free thing around.
Since I'm not capping HD, I haven't bothered to figure out the field order. I read that HD is all upper field first but this is unconfirmed.Author, Producer, Composer, Director - HC5 HDV, FS-1 SLR
Handcoder: HTML, PHP, JS, CSS - In Production: Busker Alley - The Movie

You can capture HDV just fine with HDVSplit or CapDVHS both are fee. And yes a fast PC will help a great deal, I have no problems editing HDV footage in real-time with my AMD 3800x2 Dual-core w/2 GB RAM..........There is no such thing as "Idiot-Proof".........a good Idiot will get around that every time.
