My PC has a tower case, and I've put it on its side to fit on a shelf on my desk. Everything is fine -- except the last few months the DVD drive (which is thus mounted vertically) now fails to open easily. Sometimes I have to click the "open" button a few dozen times before it finally slides out.

It worked fine for the first year or so, but now, especially if I don't use it for a few days, it almost always sticks.

If I turn the case back to the "normal" position, the drive opens easily.

Anyone have an idea of what's causing the jam, and a way to fix it?
(Aside from repositioning the case -- I can work that out for myself.)
Some part of the tray must be catching somewhere -- perhaps it can be wedged?

The drive is a LiteOn SHM 165P.

You could try removing the drive, opening the drive case, turing it sideways and looking to see what could be causing the issue. It sounds like you already know what the problem could be, now you just need to continue troubleshooting.

Of course with today's drive prices, you could just as easily replace it with a newer model.
