    Depends if you only want an instant DVD and don't care to edit. Editing is possible but a hassle with quality drop.

    I prefer MiniDV format.

    The editing machine isn't the issue. If you use an mpeg-2 native editor such as Womble, and keep you edits simple, then you can minimise the quality loss by minimising the re-encoding required. If you use an editor that decompresses the mpeg-2 video to the timeline then the whole video will be re-encoded.

    Unfortunately, in typical Apple fashion, the iMovie page is all glitz and no substance. Yes, it will import and edit mpeg-2 video. Will it do so without loss ? Probably not. That said, if you keep the bitrate high enough, said loss may be un-noticeable to most viewers.
