DVD to sub/idx or .sup to sub/idx - How can I do either?

Maybe this has been answered before but I'm still confused.

How do you do EITHER of the following:
a) DVD to sub/idx (I mean extract sub/idx files directly from the DVD's VOBs)
B .sup files to sub/idx files

It may take more than 1 software.

VobSub includes a utility that demuxes SUB/IDX from VOB files.

For SUP to IDX/SUB, you can use SubtitleCreator. Go Tools->Manipulate VobSub->Open Sub (scroll to SUP)->Save Sub (Save to IDX).

I forgot to ask with Subtitlecreator & Vobsub, will I lose the special characters like italics & musical notes when I convert to IDX/SUB?

No, because the SUB/IDX (and SUP) are graphic (bitmap) formats, not text (like SRT, for instance).
