    how does one update divx in "ffmpegx" from 4 point whatever to anything else?

    Divx 4 was the last version to be OpenSourced. DivX 5/6 is only accessible through the official DivX codec. This is a Quicktime Component and ffmpegX doesn't use this architecture. XVID is the OpenSource equivalent of DivX 5, and both codecs are fully compatible provided that you use the correct settings.
