VLC closes when I attempt to open Video_TS Folder

It seems there is an option to play a movie directly from the Video_TS folder on my HD. When I go to open and then select disk there is an option for Video_TS Folder. I browse to the folder and when I try to open the file it closes VLC. This is happening on my G4 as well as my Ibook and with two different DVD's that i have. Is this a VLC issue, and should it be able to work or am I missing something.

what version of VLC are you using?

We'd like to help you, but this forum is a two way street.
You have to provide as much revelent information as
you can, and we'll be glad to help.

Just saying:
"The latest one on their website" doesn't help and
is incomplete.
Many of us do beta testing and are involved in helping
test out new versions of software. We don't know you from
Adam, so yes, you do need to put in a little effort
and specify which version of software you are using.

To speed this along....if you are using release build 0.86c
of VLC, then by simply selecting Open Source-->selecting the
DVD Tab, and then selecting Video_TS, with DVD Menu option
checked, and then Browsing to the content, selecting the
Video_TS folder in question, and then clicking OK,
should produce a window that begins playing your video.

If not, you should try to use the "Delete Preferences" script
contained in your VLC folder, residing with the app, and
reset VLC's preferences.

Then try again.

If it fails a second time,
then I would say try another valid VIDEO_TS folder, either
copied from a non-commercial DVD, or try a new valid
rip from a commercial DVD using MTR 3.0r14 (the latest).

A ripped commercial DVD that was done using MTR 2.66
may have protections that v.2.66 of MTR cannot handle,
and if it was used, may have produced a bad ripped
VIDEO_TS folder.

Wow I wasn't trying to be smart or a jerk. You must be on forums to much of your day buddy, take a breather. I realize your 733t ; ) status on here, I have read as much as I have time to. Sorry I'm not up on all the beta release and multiple websites you know about. I am an IT guy myself but this is way out of my sector.

I use VLC 0.8.6, I'm not at the house so I don't know if it's this c release or not, and MTR 2.6.6.

I will give your suggestions a shot and see what happens, I don't remember checking and DVD Menu option.

As well could be MTR, and will upgrade to the newest version. Is this version 3xxx you speak of considered stable?

You might try checking/unchecking the "Use DVD menus" option in VLC before clicking Okay.

Ok, my computer is a MacBookPro, Intel Dual Core 2.16G, 1gb or 667 Ram.

VLC - 0.8.6.c
MTR - 2.66
DVD Player 4.6.5

I tried opening said Video_TS folder in the VLC above and it again crashed. Reset prefs, no success. Thought about the poss. of it being a bad rip. Attempted to open in DVD Player and it, as well, crashed.

I am going to install this updated version of MTR you speak of and attempt again.

Though on another note, when I burned the Video_TS folder with Toast 7 it played fine on my PS2. Would that mean the Video_TS folder is ok?

If this is a bad rip would that explain my issues with ffmpegx?

A bad rip, due to ArrCCoss2, Ripguard, or Puppet Lock2 would
explain the following:

1. Not playing at all in VLC/Crashing VLC
2. Not playing at all in DVD Player/Crashing DVD Player
3. Not playing or giving the "not a valid stream" message in MPegStreamclip.
4. Not converting/Opening/crashing ffmpegx

Haha, usually.

I'm going to set up paypal tonight and get the newest MTR and try again.

Though, even if the rip was bad would it make sense that I can author a DVD in Toast with the same Video_TS folder that wouldn't play in VLC/DVD Player and play successfully in my ps2?

Also I found that I can open the VOB files individually and play them. I'm guessing that VLC needs info from one of the other files to stream the all the vob's together?

Yes to the fact that you can burn it.
You can BURN anything in Toast,
becasue all Toast does is verify
the data, bit for bit, but not the IFO
structure, which is necessary for VLC and
Apple's DVD Player to use to navigate the
disc structure.

Think of it like this:
If a drive is corrupted, and you copy the data to a new drive,
unless the platter is physically bad, you'll never know
the corruption exists until you start having problems with a
particular file, true?

Your Video_TS is badly authored, and the file that VLC
and DVD Player needs is the IFO. Toast copied the files
over bit for bit, to a dvd, but until you accessed it,
you didn't know it was bad.

PS2 is also made by Sony, maker of ArrCCos.
Of course it's lasers ( and MB) would have error
correction built in for their crappy code.
No suprise there.

So, since the fact that ArCCoss2 screws up IFO and BUP files,
and VLC and Apple's DVD Player uses the IFO just like a regular
DVD player, if the IFO is bad, you got a Bad VIDEO_TS.

Is this what MTR 3.0 r14 circumvents then?

I'll have to give my above dvd's a try in another player and see what happens.

BTW, I completed another rip just to test in VLC/A DVD Player and it as well failed. I'm going to assume it's in relation to the above mentioned issue? Do others then have these same issues as I playing Video_TS files in VLC and ADVD Player?

with badly ripped Video TS folders, yes.

with properly ripped VIdeo_TS folders, with IFO and BUPs
intact, no these folders play fine in VLC and ADVD Player.

Yes, MTR 3.0r14 circumvents the latest protection schemes.
