Composite and s-video are low resolution, about 640x480. HD material is usually 1280x720 or 1920x1080.

Not really. Although it will depend to some extent on whether the player or the TV does a better job of upscaling.

Are you talking about s-video vs composite (usually a yellow RCA connector)? S-video is better because it keeps the color channels separate from the luminance (grayscale) channel. This prevents some of the color artifacting that occurs when luma and chroma are sent down a single wire.

Yes, that's composite. Red and White are audio, yellow is composite video.

I am running a Sony 5 disc dvd player that supports upconversion to 1080i via the hdmi output - to my Sharp 46" 1080p lcd tv. I am very pleased with the results - and the picture quality is excellent. The only disappointment comes when you are playing an older non-anamorphic dvd, as the quality does not improve as dramatically as with a well mastered anamorphic dvd. I send the audio to my home theater via optical digital.

There's no such thing as a s-video to hdmi CABLE. Conversion from analog s-video to digital HDMI requires a smart device.

As I said in another of your threads, the quality will depend on many factors including how well the device converts the analog s-video to digital form and how well it upsizes, whether or not your HDTV will furhter resize the video once it recieves it from the HDMI cable and how well it does it, and how well your HDTV converts and resizes an s-video source.

If you're talking about connecting a DVD player to an HDTV, it's almost always better use HDMI to HDMI. If your DVD player doesn't have HDMI out it would be cheaper for you to buy a new DVD player than to buy an s-video to HDMI converter box.

Analog component Y,Pb,Pr (green-blue-red as output from most DVD players, HD cable/sat boxes and some computer display cards) is capable of SD 480i/480p or HD 720p/1080i.

Same goes for DVI and HDMI digital connections.

Composite (yellow) and S-Video are SD only.

Your TV has 720p resolution so when possible use a 720p source. Other inputs get upscaled to 720p inside your TV.
