I am a beginner to the world of DVD recording and DVD blank media. I just purchased a Panasonic Progressive Scan DVD Recorder to replace my VCR. Earlier today, I was at my local grocery store and way in the back in the clearance area they had some blank DVD discs for sale. They had several brands such as Memorex, Maxell, Verbatim, TDK and Sony. The TDK and Sony caught my eye. They had a 100 pack of blue packaging TDK DVD+R made in Taiwan code DVD+R47FCB100TP for $13. They also had a 50 pack of brownish/yellow packaging Sony DVD-R Made in Japan code 50DMR47LS4 for $7. They also had the same Sony pack with an ending code number of 3 I believe that was made in Taiwan. The same color packaging Sony DVD-R discs were also available in a 25 pack for $4 but they were either made in Taiwan or China. I think it was 25DMR47LS3. These all seem like really cheap prices but it still would be bad to pay for junk. I was curious what you all think of the aforementioned DVD-r discs. How long does a package of 50 DVD-R discs last you all? Can I download youtube video clips onto these discs and watch them on my television? Thanks.

"50-pack of brownish/yellow packaging Sony DVD-R Made in Japan"
Those should be awesome media, TYG02 Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs.
The Sony Taiwan would be good too, especially the DVD+R ones.

The TDK is probably CMC, junk.

Wish that deal was at my local grocery store!

The Sony +R (SonyD21 specifically) seem to be the best +R I've tried and are the only media whose recordings will play on 1 DVD player I have.

How can you tell it is junk? For me it's actually a hit or miss for TDK DVD-Rs. I've had the good media IDs until now where I've gotten a RITEKF01. Any specific packaging signs to look for for TDK or Sony?

    Edit:
Apparently, CompUSA is having a sale on TDK DVD-Rs again right now...

Law of averages. You're most likely going to get CMC. Buying TDK is a gamble.

Buy the SONY DVD-R media that's on sale at BEST BUY. $12.99 for a 50 pack spindle.
TDK dvd media is crap since they've outsourced their media to RITEK & CMC.

It's been years now that TDK outsourced their dvd media to CMC & RITEK.

TDK media can also have TDK media codes (TTH02, TDK003) but the media is still manufactuerd by either CMC or Moser Baer, similar to how Mitsubishi media is made by CMC, Prodisc and Moser Baer.

Yes, TDK sadly is no longer a favored media.
I hate the fact that there are good sales of TDK
now everywhere and they are junk.

Even Target has stopped carrying TDK ( in my area) in favor
of Taiwan made Sony, Memorex and iMation ( ).

Thank God for Sam's Club for selling Verbatim 8x for $12.99!
    and Verbatim 100 pk 16x for $32!

    Local stores suck @$$.

Yes, yes, but it's still very much TDK media. I've not seen any in a long time now, but I noticed Meritline (or SMS) recently started to carry "TDK Professional" on spindles. Much like Maxell, I bet their own media is now in pro lines only, leaving consumer-grade stuff sold in store to Ritek and CMC crap.

It's an ugly shift, but you can still buy these discs online to get your favorite media ID.
