Over the last few months I've made a few projects with Vegas Movie Studio (V7) and been generally happy with the results. Most of my source video in these projects was Hi8 captured via Canopus AVDC-300.
I've just installed Vegas V7 for a bit of a test drive.
I opened up my VMS project in Vegas and checked out the histogram. I was horrified to see nothing above about 150. I turned off all the Fx, no change. Tried levels, no change. Did not matter what I tried, still clipped at around 150.
So, Plan B was to create a new project in Vegas and dump a few of the source clips onto the timeline and presto, eveything was good. Full range of luminance, easily adjustable via levels.
I loaded up the mpg file created by VMS just to see if it was something unique to the VMS project being loaded up in Vegas. The mpg file demonstrated the same problem. nothing above 150.
Seems to me then, that color correction etc in VMS is crippled.
