I have a feeling this issue will just get chalked up to the vagaries of the DL world, but I figure I'd throw this out to the experts.
I've been buring DL discs for a year os so now and by following the advice here I've had no trouble (Always used Verbatim DL +R) Recently I got a pack of the Verbatim Inkjet printable DL discs. I burned one using my normal method (Adobe Encore -> create img file ->burn to disc w/IMGBurn The burner is bit-set to DVD-ROM). The disc is not recognized by my Pioneer DV-563a. However, it plays fine in my much older Pioneer DVL-909, Sony DVP-S360 and even PS2.
Odder still the DV-563a has played my previous burned DL discs fine.
I checked and the media code on the printable discs is MKM-001-00 which I believe is the same as the non printable.
My guess is that it's something wonky with the DV-563a, but it never hurts to ask.
Any insight it appreciated.

Are the printable discs made in the same country as the nonprintables you've used?
