Philips DVP5982 Compatible USB Flash Drives

This is a thread for Compatible USB Flash drives for the Philips DVP-5982.

NOT COMPATIBLE:
Cruzer Titanium 2.0GB(USB 2.0 and backwards compatible with 1.1) It says "Unsupported Device" but it works with on my DVP-5960 though.
A-DATA PD8(Turbo Speed) 2GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model PD8 2.0 2GB BLUE (According to user buzznjackal in this thread)

PNY 2GB MINI ATTACHE 2.0 USB FLASH DRIVE
Ridata MiniEZ 128mb (I had to try it multiple times to get it to work)

SanDisk (U3) 4 GB drive (works after uninstalling U3 software and formatting with "Swissknife")

I would like comments from other users. Because I have 2 Sandisk Cruzer Titaniums worth some $70-80 and if they do not work, I may as well return this DVD player. For my circumstances this model is worse than the 5960 I already own(I assumed that it would have better USB support than the 5960, but the device compatibility is worse). I called Philips Tech support and they were no help. So hopefully the Videohelp community can come together so we can build some kind of a dialogue on what is compatible and what is not compatible since Philips will not maintain a compatibility list.

Incorrect, I assumed the same. My Cruzer Titanium works on my 5960 and not on the 5982.

I tested a Ridata MiniEZ 128mb. I had to insert the USB drive 3 times for it to get read by the DVD player. On my 5960 I had to insert it only once.

The USB seems more spotty and less compatible the more I test it with different USB drives, but I have no more drives to test it with though.

Hey Nikephoros - can you let me know how you got the PNY 2GB MINI ATTACHE 2.0 USB FLASH DRIVE to work. I formatted it to a FAT32 and still no luck.. Gives me "Device not supported"

Tried formatting with both Swissknife (primary partition, FAT32) and through XP. Still get "device not supported" error. Do I have to update the DVD players firmware first?

Hi, I'm new here.
Ultra Flydrive 1 GB works well.
SanDisk (U3) 4 GB drive is getting "device not supported" error. It is formated FAT32.

I will be trying "Swissknife" and update this post.


update: Uninstalled U3 software from pc and Sandisk (U3) 4 GB and used swissknife to format it fat32. Now it works great.

To get the PNY attache to work in the DVP-5982 was dicy.

I plugged it in and out of the usb port multiple times until finally it worked once. Since then I have returned the DVP 5982 and got an RCA DRC285 which I feel is a better player with a very similar featureset, and it is cheaper in price by about $10.

Sounds like a reasonable alternative to the Philips DVP-5960/5982. Does it support Divx/Xvid aspect ratio settings? Or provide manual adjustment of the AR? What about packed bitstream, GMC, QPEL, and high bitrates? SRT subtitles? Any ability to zoom in/out when playing Divx files? Deblocking?

Jagabo, what impressed me with the RCA DRC285 was that it played files in the Ogg Media container format(.ogm). Also it has very buggy support for playing WMV files. When you try to play a WMV it seems the unit hangs, but if you wait long enough it will play the video of the file, but with no audio working. The player will also automatically rip a music CD to a device in the USB slot(I never tested this). SRT subtitles work. It also has an Svideo port which the Philips DVP5960 and 5982 lack.

I cannot give much more detailed info. I bought the Philips DVP5982 as a gift for someone. Since the usb drives I had did not work in it I retured it for the RCA DRC285 which I feel is an overall better player. You can view detailed format capabilities on the Divxtest page for the DRC285.

Do i have to uninstall the software ?

Update: Yes, it works perfectly after uninstalling the U3 software and formatting to FAT32.

For the SanDisk Cruzer micro....go to the sandisk site and download the U3 uninstaller.
It will uninstall the U3 program and automatically format the Cruzer. Works great!

Simply reformatting the drive will not work...you must run the uninstaller!!

I want to buy a flash drive, and these are my two options, also I know that I have to Uninstall the U3 and format it with Swissknife.

I never tried uninstalling the U3 software. I just uninstalled the U3. I will test on a friends 5982.

Does anyone know any test source for good divx test files? I know scenes with rain mess up on the 5960, I would like to test if it can handle rain. Does the 5982 definitely support USB 2.0 speeds?

It's not "rain" per se, it's that the bitrate gets too high for the USB interface. Noise (static, rain, flashing strobe lights, splashing water, etc) requires high bitrates because MPEG encoding relies largely on the fact large portions of the picture don't change from frame to frame. Large amounts of noise mean that nearly every pixel changes with each frame, hence little compression and high bitrates (or poor quality).

It does not. But I hear it's handles bitrate spikes a little better.

I know this thread is old but my question directly relates to it.

I have this DVD player and bought a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 16GB flash drive which was not recognized by the DVD player ("Device not supported"). Reading around on this board a bit it seemed that reformatting the drive to remove the U3 software worked for a couple of people so thats what I did, but alas it did not help.

Could someone tell me a (preferably) 16GB flash drive that will work for this DVD player?

Did you format FAT32 or NTFS? You need FAT32.

It was already FAT32 but with the U3 software as well. I thought that might have interfering so I uninstalled the U3 software and reformatted in FAT32.
