This must be a common problem . . . but can someone tell me what causes it?

When I play DVD's that I have burned, I sometimes get irregular portions of the screen appearing to freeze for a few frames before going back to normal. A few seconds later, it'll happen again.

I would think it has something to do with the burning process (I understood it had to do with my harddrive not being defragged properly before burning), but for one thing: With a short DVD I've just burned, I've played it repeatedly on my $100 Sansui DVD player without even the slightest problem. But last night, I took it to a friends house & put it on his Pioneer DVD & it was plagued with this weird effect every 5-10 seconds.

Since it doesn't appear on every DVD player & even on the same one, when replayed, it may play well in areas it didn't play well in before, surely the 'flickering' isn't actually "recorded" onto the DVD.

What causes it? Can anything be done to stop/reduce it?

Usually crappy media. Some dvd players are more picky about the media also. www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia www.nomorecoasters.com

I used a Datastream "Professional". (That's what the makers call it). Though I've had this problem in the past on DVD-R, this particular one was a DVD-RW. I guess that could also cause an issue for some DVD players - even if they can 'read' it, they could have problems reading it properly?
