I had a fire at my apartment and my pioneer 531 was water damaged. I took out the hard drive and tried to hook-up the hard drive to my computer as a external hard drive but it didn't work (didn't show as a drive). Any suggestions of how to get this to work and get the video files from the hard drive?

You might want to have a crack at the drive under linux

Just in case you cant see it : From P (around half way down)

I have connected my Dish DVR522 Hard Drive to my PC and upon inspection of the drive with partition magic I notice that it is 3 Linux partitions.

I booted into Knoppix 3.6 and the 3 drives are automatically mounted and short cuts are created on the desktop.

The 1st and 2nd partitions seem to be database files for the TV Guide and DVR Recordings I assume.

The 3rd partition however, has all of the recorded files on it. The problem I've run into is all of these files are in a *.tsp file format. Staying in a Linux environment this is no problem as Xine Media Player will open and play these .tsp files with no problem.

But we all seem to want to pull these files into a windows environment in order to edit out commercial and burn our recordings to DVD...

And this one , which would be more the method used :

http://lyberty.com/mediatech/projects/dishrip.html , its the same principal for all units .

Tip : don't forger to set your DVR's hard drive to slave prior to booting with linux , and dont use any form of external connection to the pc (dosent seem to be ideal , or work) .

  3. If the 531H is damaged beyond repair and you like the unit, there one on eBay at a "buy it now" price of about $170.

I would get that unit, do the hdd swap and dump your files. Then keep the old unit and its drive for parts. The procedure is at this site.

There is a chance that the files might have been damaged by either the fire or water.
