Philips 5140, Xvid & Subtitles

I've been trying figure out why my 5140 won't show subtitles from DVD rips converted to Xvid. Here's what I did:

1) Ripped the Beverly Hills Cop Trilogy using DVDDecrypter in PGC mode,

2) Set up AutoGK for External Subtitles (have WinRAR as needed) & 1/3 DVD-R.

3) Ended up w/ idx, sub & srt subtitle files for each film.

4) Burned these and the avi files to a DVD+RW.

5) Loaded in 5140. Movies play but no subtitles.

If I press the "subtitles" button on the remote the OSD toggles between subtitles on & off, but none get shown during dialog scenes. The player's manual clearly states that sub's & srt's are supported and that they had to have the exact same filename as the avi (did so on the latter). I also tried giving the files 8.3 filenames (were long before) & reburning. Still no go. What would I be doing wrong?

Edit: As an afterthought, if I play the disc on my computer using Media Player Classic or Winamp (DShow), the subtitles DO show up. *scratches head*

3. Are you sure you get a .srt from autogk??? srt subs are text files and it requires ocr to get them from a dvd.

I was thinking of the srt files inside the agk_tmp folder -- I tried one of those (renaming it to the same as the avi) & it didn't work. Although, I did find that the sub/idx combo will work on the 5140 as long as the visual scan (X times) isn't used. Then the subtitles disappear and won't return unless the film is restarted from the player menu (I was fast-forwarding through the opening credits to a dialog scene).

Regarding the srt files, two of them are found in the aforementioned agk_tmp like this:

MovieName.sub.cc.srt

MovieName.sub.cc.unicode.srt

In the case of Beverly Hills Cop (Part I), the "unicode" file has the lyrics to the opening song ("The Heat is On") enclosed in musical notes while the other file has them in question marks. I assume then that the "unicode" version allows extended ascii. Could these used for conversion? It would be nice to see the musical lyrics which the sub/idx version doesn't show at all.
