  1. I would like to simply be able to import the .avi files and have the aurhoring program convert them to the appropriate mpg file and bitrate to fill the entire disk. Sometimes I only have 1 1/2 hours sometimes I might have closer to 2 1/2. The program I currently can only import about an hour fifteen minutes. Thanks.

Authoring programs only do one thing, author a DVD compliant MPEG file to the DVD format. You are asking about a All-in-One converter that re-encodes, or changes the format to MPEG, then authors.

For that, look to ConvertXToDVD, or one of the converters here: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/all-in-one-dvd-converters. Most of them can be adjusted to fill the DVD. But if you are converting from something like a 700MB Xvid video to a DVD format, you can use all the bitrate you want, it won't get you any better quality after a certain point. Most Xvids convert to about 1.5 - 2GB. Increasing the bitrate will make the file larger, but with no higher quality, and it will take longer.

If you have a higher quality source file, then you can increase the bitrate, and the size, and preserve the quality you have when you do the conversion.
