How can I improve the quality of a video file? Right now I have some videos in AVI format (Xvid) that look like crap. The quality is clearly not good if anyone viewed them. There are a lot of lines and square blocks throughout the video. How can I fix this? Is there a program I can use to enhance the overall quality of a video? Any advice/input would be much appreciated! Thanks!

You can't improve quality that you don't have in the first place.

But you might be able to run some filtering and improve the 'look' of the video slightly. Try some VirtualDub filters. Maybe a deblocking filter like this one: http://www.compression.ru/video/deblocking/index_en.html

There are many more available at http://www.thedeemon.com/VDFilter/list.html or http://neuron2.net/other.html

I use VD Mod more often as I like the way it handles audio better and it also accepts more formats, including MPEG, than the regular VD.

Many guides for VirtualDub also. Just look to the bottom of the VD toolpage in our 'Tools' section.

    And welcome to our forums.

Most editing progs as well as compositing & FX programs have image filters usually color adjustment (histogram), brightness/contrast, and sharpness filters work well for improving the appearance of poor video. - adobe premiere, adobe after effects, and ulead editing suite are programs that I have personally done this with.

If you are re-encoding the entire video for DVD purposes TMPGEnc offers many of these options too.

If this is only for viewing on PC DIVX player offers brightness, contrast, and color controls.

Aside from the options included in VDub you can also adjust the setting of most codecs (like XVID) save as avi>choose xvid codec, then there should be an option 4 encoding settings.
