    Hello everybody,

I will buy Philips home theater HTS3500s soon , and I am afraid that my player will become obsolete. It divx certified device, but not divx ultra certified.
What is your opinion: divx ultra codec will be used just for Hd divx, or also for SD divx 700mb avi files?
Is it possible to upgrade fw for divx ultra (not specifically for my device but generally for any player)?
In specification for my player is written that it will play divx 6 files . What is the connection between divx 6 and divx ultra?

    Thanks in advance

Divx Ultra isn't a different version of the codec. The "Ultra" certifacation adds support for menus, chapters, multiple audio and subtitle tracks.

Divx 6 is backwards compatible with Divx 5. Anything that can play Divx 5 should be able to play Divx 6.

Note there are Divx features that cannot be played by many players, regardless of certification.

I am still not sure will my philips home theater (chipset mediatek 1389ee) which is only divx certified, be able to play divx with these extra features (menus, chapters...) encoded in divx 6 codec ?
Based on your previous post I concluded that it MIGHT BE POSSIBLE ?

No, it should play them without the extra features. IE no Menus or chapters.

IOWs it should play Ultra Divx files as regular divx.

If you find .divx files that don't play, you can usually use VirtualDubMod to remux just the main video and audio tracks to a normal AVI file.

And they may ned the extension renamed from .divx to .avi, depends on the player.

No, it should NOT be possible. You need a Divx Ultra certified player. I don't know that this can be fixed with a firmware update. It may need to be built into the chipset.

You can play Divx Ultra discs that are not high definition resolution, but menus, chapters, etc. won't work.

Playing divx ultra encoded movies without extra features (menus, chapters) is good enough for me. Thanks.
