New Philips Upscaling DVD Player DVP5982/37 1080P! and USB 2.0 Support?

I have the exact same problem as painkiller

I connected the coaxial digital out to my receiver, which has 2 optical ins and 1 coaxial in. it simply will not work. the player wont let me turn "on" the digital out. while it puts out a nice picture, i like being able to get DD 5.1 or DTS instead of my TV speakers.

Was the HDMI ... connected ??

Cant have both the same time ... bummer huh ??

Okay, I was wondering if someone could please help me. I want a Philips DVP5982. I have the DVP5960 and love it. For those of you who don't know, the problems out of the box with the 5960 are: You can't ust the digital audio coaxil output while using HDMI (in a nutshell, if you want to use HDMI to get the upscaling, you can't get digital audio on an external amplifier. It only carries the digital audio through HDMI while HDMI is in use), it doesn't support DTS and the USB playback from external hard drives is somewhat limited because it is USB 1.1, meaning that if you play files using a higher bit rate (above 3000 kbps) it stutters. ALL of these problems were rectified after using the firmware upgrade on Philips' website.

Now what I want to know is: does the 5982 have the same issues and do they all get fixed with the 5982 firmware upgrade on philips' site? And is the USB connection still USB 1.1 and if it is, does it perform better? I've seen some links on here and some contradict each other, is anyone saavy enough to answer these questions? It would be amazing if someone could.

DVP5960... ALL of these problems were rectified after using the firmware upgrade on Philips' website.

Even the USB high bitrate problem?

While I cannot speak for dork4638, I cannot use the dvd player's HDMI port since none of my entertainment system (A/V receiver and the TV itself) do not have such connections.

So, I cannot see why this player would show video when I hook it directly to the tv and NOT when I hook the player to the A/V receiver instead.

I was extremely careful in the hookups to assure everything was going to the correct ports/connections.

I do not (yet) have tv's or receivers with HDMI. Shouldn't need any of that at this time just for this player.

I want to know if the unit will output digital audio (DTS especially) from the coaxil output if the HDMI is hooked up. I would also like to know if the USB connectivity is better/faster than the 5960.

Yes I bought the DVP5980 for watching dvds upscaled as my number one reason. I also questioned myself wether I could watch dvds via hdmi yet simultaneously use the analog sound out to listen to audio via external speakers and it turns out this works perfectly well. I disabled the tvs inbuilt amp so the 2 dont clash, altho this is not a necessity as you can mute the tv sound if you want to use the external speakers. Great job of upscaling and also plays divx perfectly via the usb. I cant recommend this dvd player highly enough, am very happy with it.

I got the DVP5982 a few days ago (be careful of Best Buy's deceptive online pricing - the prices at the store are often higher).

I don't have a high def tv yet so I mostly got it because I read a lot of comments about this player being able to play many video formats. I have a ton of avi files of tv shows, mostly DivX, and they most likely range in quality and encoding methods (I don't know much about that area either).

I've played 2 commercial DVDs, 2 DVDs that I recorded myself from avi files and a bunch of DivX avi files directly from DVD-RW disks and from a generic no-name 4GB USB stick. No problems yet when played to a regular tv set.

However, the limitation of the On Screen Display that can't show the whole file name of DivX files is a major shortcoming. I read somewhere on this board that it has to do with the licensing of the long file name method of FAT file systems that Micro$oft holds.

If anyone knows of any hack that allows the OSD display to show the whole file name, either on the index screen or on the screen when it shows time elapsed/remaining, that would be a major improvement in the usability of this player.

I can return it to the store and get something else but at this low price level (since I won't be viewing HD content any time soon) is there any other comparable player that will play various video files as well as this and has a better user interface?

They do make it hard to find the "true" answer tho. The maual says it provides 500mA of power (which is USB 2.0 I believe)

-The remote is still a 'brick'. Hard to figure out which end to point at the player when it's dark.

-Turning on the unit and getting to the point of being about to play something takes a few seconds - it's definitely not instantaneous - but I may just be impatient. :]

-No long file names

Other than the above negatives this unit is fantastic. Looks good, upscales, plays everything I've thrown at it (including a few qpel vids). Very happy with it.

If you have any questions about the 5892, don't be afraid to ask. If the questions are "too" technical, I won't even know what you are talking about! I'll try to help tho.

I suspect no is the answer but wanted to see if it's been tried. Can .vob files be played from the USB port on the 5982 or is it like the 5960, not fast enough to handle the high bitrates required.

Rip one off a DVD. I know that high bitrate VOB files do not play smoothly on the DVP 5982. It might still be better than the 5960 though.

VOBs didn't play good for me. The 5982 is better then the 5960 but if you want to play VOBS from a DVD put on a DVD.

Okay, I have some answers regarding this player.

IT IS NOT USB 2. It it better than the 5960 but is still lame if you have higher bit rates that you want to play via the USB input. FOR EXAMPLE... If you download or rip a movie that is about 700 megabites, with prologic surround, it works well... If you have a higher video bit rate with DIGITAL AUDIO, 5.1. AC-3, DTS, etc. It STUTTERS BAD HOWEVER, if you rip the movies and burn them on to a DVD, it plays just about anything you throw at it AND it plays it WELL.

IF YOU HAVE THE HDMI HOOKED UP, THE DIGITAL COAXIL OUTPUT DOES NOT WORK.

From what I'm told, it does not support DTS. I was going to test it but decided to pack it up and take it back once I found out that the digital coax doesn't work if the HDMI is hooked up so that means: YOU CAN'T SEND THE DIGITAL AUDIO SIGNAL TO A SEPERATE RECEIVER AND HAVE THE 1080I/P UPSCALING AT THE SAME TIME!

This player is good. I have the 5960 and when I added the firmware, the DTS was activated, the coaxil output works when the HDMI is hooked up while upscaling. From what I can tell, it's virtually the same DVD player as the 5960 with slightly better USB playback for MPEG, DIVX, XVID, etc. AND they ablity to do the 1080p upscaling.

I might take the 5982 back and try the new Pioneer, they tell me it has USB 2... so we'll see. I'll keep y'all posted.

I think I'm pretty well versed in the player now, so if anyone has any questions... I have a 5 year back ground in A/V gear and installation... I'm cool with trying to help out.

Just some additional info for Peeps . I have the 5980 and was most interested for the divx ultra which doesnt seem to get much of a mention. The claimed features work (havent tried subtitles at all) the files I used were pre-encoded avi's which were run thru divxmediabuilder and saved as xxxx.divx . ALso I created a 2.5gb file which I burnt to a UDF disc using Nero and that played fine. In fact it seemed a liitle quicker than ISO. I havent yet tested the claim of a maximum of 648 titles supported.
Also the player shows a 14 char filename (or the first 14 chars) better than the claimed 8.3
it also shows a much longer directory name up to 40 characters

I just bought the DVP5982. I m having hard time playing divx files i download from Stage6divx. Like i downloaded Bleach Memories of Nobody for my cousins and when I try to watch it keeps loading..the Reading Index box does not appear. Does anyone know what i have to do? I already activated the VOD crap. I was trying to play it VIA the MiniHardDrive i had plugged into the USB direct port. Can someone advise?

I have had the 5982 for a while and have had no complaints apart from the remote control design and the slow speed it takes to read discs.

I recently updated the firmware, and unfortunately I didn't wait out the full 5 minutes for the upgrading. I powered the unit off, and now it won't do anything? I know it wasn't smart, but does anybody know what I should do? Will a factory reset work? I don't even know how to do that.
Any advice would be appreciated.

That new firmware update also I believe has cured the packed bitstream playback issues.
