Thread: is it an UOP?

    Ahoy there.

I want to backup some DVDs that I have and I want to remove a thing I don't like.

The 'thing' is, whenever I play the DVD on a stand-alone player, on the LCD display instead of showing the time, it only shows --:--:--
And whenever I play the DVD on the computer, the slider seems to be locked. It does show the time, but every time I skip a chapter, the time counter goes back to zero.

Does anyone knows why some DVDs have those screwy time counters?

Now, at first, I thought it was an UOP (user operational prohibitions, or something like that) that was preventing the DVD player to show the time. But I used DVD Shrink to redo the DVD without UOPs but it didn't work. I also tried DVDfab Gold to do the same thing and it didn't work either.

I do know that I can rip the DVD and re-encode the videos and then use a DVD authoring tool to create a new DVD in order to make this 'time' problem go away, but that's the last thing I want to do since the DVD in question (Monty Phyton's Flying Circus) has some awesome menus that I'm not willing to loose.

    got any ideas?

    thanks ^^

It will be issues with the mpeg encoding itself. Probably fixable by demuxing and running i through ReStream or VideoRedo's repair function, then putting it back. Neither of these will cause re-encoding.

Thanks again for helping me ^^

But let me get this straight:
    • - Demux every title in the DVD
      - Run ReStream on them (in order to make the screwy time thing go away, will the 'reset timestamps' do the trick?)
      - Put the video and audio back together and put it back to the DVD (is DVDremake the apropriate tool for that kind of process?)

I would try just one title as a test. If it works, fine. If it doesn't, you haven't wasted to much time.

The bit where you put it back together is something I haven't done. This guide : will walk you through the process. Step 4 onwards is where you need start. There may be a better way to do it, if anyone wants to chime in.

    Good luck.

I used ReStream in one demuxed title and it seems to work fine. Problem Solved!

    Now, about Step 4...
I checked some features in DVD Remake and I believe it's duable... But, I have 8 DVDs wich have this kind of problem. Just the thought of doing this on every single DVD makes me tired already.

My set of DVDs work fine, actually. I just wanted to see if I could correct the timestamp issue.

At first, I wanted to see if there was an easy process to correct the issue (such as decrypting or even re-encoding using a tool). A shame that such process doesn't exist.

But thanks again for your help. That little experiment was worthy anyway ;P
