problems with adobe premiere pro 2.0

so i have this video, its an xvid mpeg4 with audio at 48000hz, 173 kbit vbr lame mp3 3.92. ive been trying to load it into premiere, where i get the "unsupported audio rate" error. before, i could import it but without video, audio was fine. after i installed the needed xvid codec i got that unsupported audio rate error.

then, i loaded the vid in vdub and stripped the avi without the audio. trying to import it resulted in the same failure "unsupported audio rate". i was like "wtf?" since there was no audio present in that file.

after that, i settled for converting the audio in the file to pcm or wave, something premiere could handle. but then vdub said it didnt support the audio format. again, i was like "wtf?" since its just mp3, vlc handles it fine and pretty much every other player i tried it with.

the next step was getting avidemuxer and demuxing the thing. trying with just a stripped avi without sound still resulted in the import error. then, i converted the xvid avi into a dv avi (uncompressed) without sound. it made the file 10 times bigger but FINALLY premiere was able to import it and its fine ever since....

my question would be if anyone had similiar problems and if so, how to get it working without having to convert the xvid to a dv avi since it will take up a ridiculous amount of space cause i have something like several hours of stuff to cut in premiere. any help here?

Importing Divx, XviD, etc, barely ever works properly. Don't even bother (as you have experienced).

Your current method (conversion) is pretty much the only way.....

thanks for the reply Guiboche. do you happen to know what kind of formats premiere does support? like mov or h264 or any other codec with which i could shrink the files to a smaller size? hdd space is definitely an issue here.
