    Hi

I got an '.avi'-video with AVC-Audio and H264-Video inside. Now the problem is, that winamp just plays the audio but no video. The other programs either do the same or don't playback anything. For example Virtualdub says that no H264 codec could be found.
I've installed two different H264-codecs this far but none changed anything so I uninstalled them.

Yeah, my questions are: What am I doing wrong? Why don't the codecs work?

I forgot the first codec, but this is the second I tried:
    http://www.codec-download.de/content/view/325/9/

And by the way: VLC does play the video, but I'm gonna convert the video so it's no use to me.

edit: Oh I forgot: I also tried downloading the codec via WindowsMediaPlayer but that codec didn't work, too.

    Thanks, it works =)

Could you just explain why the codecs didn't work? I'm just too curious to know it.

    Hi,
Codecs are used both to ENCODE and DECODE video of their type, some only encode, for example x264 is for creating H.264 video only, it does not decode it so you can watch it. My guess is that the Codecs you downloaded were for encoding only.

Of course, there's also a convert (transcoding) feature in VLC, as well.

As for x264, I know there's an unofficial VfW codec variant of it, but I can't remember whether or not it handles both encoding and decoding.

@GMaq: Yeah, that sounds logical ^^ Maybe they really did only encode it.

@Ai Haibara: Cool I hadn't noticed until now. I'll try the feature of VLC later =D
