How put the subtitel in FFmpeg (pfffff)

I am having the same problem. Program will not load my .srt file when I try to encode an .avi file to DVD format. Tried numerous times unsuccessfully. What we need is an illustrated guide for this problem. I followed all the suggestions on this forum and other sites-NADA!

If you have a failed conversion, please provide the Process Information log. You may access this log by clicking the blue "i" in the ffmpegX Progress window, after a conversion attempt.

This is my first message I just registered. I have used ffmpegx in the past for little things but a friend of mine asked me a DVD of a film which is only in divx and needs to have Turkish subtitles which I can download on the net. Now, my problem is also with the subtitles but I guess I'm a bit further than you guys are so I'll go on and write about how I PREVIEW my subtitles.

I uploaded a video file. It should be attached. Please check it.

Beware that you should check that your subtitle file is a UNICODE-8 and also that the right Text Encoding must be selected. Mine ALTHOUGH is selected still doesn't work !

So I'm keeping on trying..

... a film which needs to have Turkish subtitles. My problem is also with the subtitles.
The subtitle file is UNICODE-8.

If your subtitle file is Unicode-8, then also select UTF-8 in ffmpegX's subtitle text encoding (not 8859-9).
(When your subtitle is Unicode-8 and you select 8859-9 in ffmpegX, you will see weird stuff like "açıklığa kavuÅŸturabilir" instead of "açıklığa kavuşturabilir".)

Also use a font that has full Turkish glyphs. The copy of Arial that is supplied with ffmpegX does not contain all such characters. Even with the correct text encoding, you may see "_" for missing characters. The fonts Times, Geneva, Gadget, Trebuchet, Ayuthaya and STHeiti seem better and more complete for Turkish characters.

I have another problem though,

I've chosen everything, set my bitrate etc.. etc.. I've attached a JPEG of my settings on the filters tab of FFmpegx.
When I encode the file the subtitles aren't hardcoded as I've expected them to be.
I'm encoding a mpg(2) file by the way.

When encoding to DVD, the subtitles will be soft (selectable), unless "Decode with mplayer" is set in the Options tab. Only then will the subtitles be hardcoded (burned in to the video).

The "Burn" drop-down selection in the Filters tab is there for what to do with subtitles in VOB source files, not for external subtitles.

Ok. Question is I have two avi files of the same film. And I'm encoding directly to mpeg. Don't I need to encode to DVD (VOB) structure to get the subtitles to be soft and selectable. And if so, how would I be able to do that if I'm encoding twice for every two avi's or is the mpg file somehow wrapping the subtitle file as well? Is there a way to add multiple subtitles also ?

I set "Decode with mplayer" but the rendering seems to goes on forever without the progress bar moving. And the CPU is at 1 or 2 % so nothing seems to be moving..I redownloaded all the components and installed them again.

ffmpegX will not include a subtitle stream in the intermediate MPEG output, but will add the subtitle stream right before creating the VOB structure.
You could convert part one to .mpg, then part two to .mpg, then join them, then author that with subs to a VIDEO_TS folder.

ffmpegX allows for one subtitle stream when converting to DVD-Video.

The ffmpegX Progress window may show one of two possible progress bars. Either the bar fills from left to right for the estimated percentage, or the bar shows the "barber pole" when a percentage can't be calculated (yet). It is possible that it starts with the barber pole until a percentage is known, and then continues as a regular progress bar. I don't know why the conversion would stall.

Like you said joining the two files with hardcoded subs will work. Though i've managed to complete the render process normally (unlike before where it stalled like you pointed out) to hardcode the subs using the "decode with player" checkbox, I still got the video encoded without the subs.

I wonder if any of the checkboxes, settings are somehow getting in the way of each other..
