  4. Have you guys tried Verbatims X16 DVD-Rs?
I have had no problems with using these with my GX7. TDK X16s worked for me.
Also, CC sells Nexxtech X8 that really are X4. These have also worked for me. I really only use Verbatims, so I've never had a media problem, besides about 4 discs my GX7 didn't like. I've made over 500 DVDs so far.
BTW, where were your GX7s made?
Mine is a early production made in Japan GX7, latter GX7s were produced in Malyasia. I've heard the made in Japan ones are better.

    Pinetop,
Mine IS made in malasia. Not sure if there's anything I can do with it. I would think if I had the latest firmware from a Japanese model it might fix the cannot play disk error.

  6. Heres another tip that may help you GX7 owners that are having problems with x16 DVD-Rs.
CC has new Nexxtech DVD-Rs these have newer packaging and state that their NX2. They say their x8, and they are. Prior offerings said x8, and were x4. Anyhow, I tried these and they do work in my GX7. They are UME media and are on sale for $8.99 for 50pk.
I've made two DVDs with this media and my GX7, I've also burned four DVDs, no problems so far. If ya don't trust UME, you could take the GX7 created DVD and burn a copy on your fav media with your PC. I would not hold my breath waiting for Sony to offer a firmware update.

The Nexxtech DVD+R's are 8.99 and they don't work either. should I go back tomorrow and get the $29.99 DVD-R's?

Looks like you guys will be trolling for old crappy media.

The Nexxtech 8x DVD-R are identical UME media ID's to the older Playo 8x DVD-R (same media ID as 4x UMEs).

If you have the service documentation, it should have a recommended media list.

You can take it to the media list on this site and expand your universe to all of the media with the same mediaIDs and then troll the net and the clearance tables at retailers until you find a supply of something that is supported.

I don't think your SONY recorder uses a standard PC compatible drive so unlike with commodity recorders you can't swap it out. But certainly you should check. Perhaps the drive is something used in a PC which might be firmware upgradeable in a PC or at least swapable.

    The Sony GX7 only records to DVD-R.DVD-RW. & DVD+RW.
It will not record to DVD+R.
And in the Chicagoland area, Nexxtech DVD-Rs are $8.99 a 50pk.

    The firmware is here:
    http://groups.google.com/group/techassist
Version 1.30 and is only for USA units. That is all I have. Do not ask for any other. If someone has access to Sony ESI service then PM me. I'd like to get a user/pw if possible. thanks!
BTW - this fw supposedly only corrects a DISK EJECT problem with "self burned" DVDs. If you are handy with firmware you might be able to hack some new media codes / speeds in there too. This is funky firmware. Good luck!
